The risk for heavy rain and severe weather I outlined in this morning’s blog post is being closely monitored by several branches of the National Weather Service early this afternoon:
In the light green shading are flood watches issued by the local National Weather Service Offices in Binghamton and Buffalo. These watches are in effect through the night and into tomorrow for localized flash flooding.
Similarly, the Weather Prediction Center has a discussion out for heavy rain and flash flooding within the area circled in the dark green outline. The Weather Prediction Center has also upgraded our region to a Level 2 (of 4) risk for flash flooding. I continue to be concerned about pockets of serious flash flooding, as I outlined this morning.
Lastly, the dark red outline is a discussion area from the Storm Prediction Center on the possibility of a severe thunderstorm watch. This same approximate area has also been upgraded to a Level 2 (out of 5 in this case) risk for severe thunderstorms. A watch has a 60% chance of being issued, though any watches would likely be just southeast of our area, or possibly including, in order of likelihood, Tioga, Cortland, and Tompkins counties.
Update: Watch issued. Read more here.
The amount of rain and thunderstorms should start to drastically increase across our area, coming in from the south, after 4 PM.
I will continue to monitor our weather closely today and will be using this Weather Updates feature to post pertinent information as the situation evolves.
