Cool, showery weekend, but then…

finger lakes weather forecast mothers day weekend noreaster rain wind cool
Mother’s Day Weekend will be a bit cool and showery, but then a switch will be flipped and temperatures will soar.

One final cool, wet storm system will swing through the Finger Lakes this weekend, then it is off to the races with above normal temperatures by Tuesday.

Dreary Mother’s Day Weekend

The work week will end on a fine note with a mix of sun and clouds and comfortable temperatures.

Those temperatures are starting the day in the 40s, but should top out near or above 60 degrees for most of the region. The western parts of the Southern Tier, however, will remain in the mid and upper 50s.

Clouds will increase from the southwest as the next storm system lifts north into the Mid-Atlantic. A few showers will start to arrive during the evening hours and will become more widespread overnight.

A batch of steady rain looks like it will clip the eastern Finger Lakes Saturday morning, mostly from an Elmira-Ithaca-Syracuse line and points east. To the west, on and off showers will be likely, but rain amounts will be low.

Showers will taper off for a time Saturday night, but more showers will be possible on Sunday.

For most of the Finger Lakes, less than a quarter inch of new rain is expected between Saturday and Sunday, with upwards of a half inch across the eastern parts of the region.

Temperatures will remain below normal, with highs Saturday ranging from the low 50s in the north to the upper 40s further south, while on Sunday everyone should reach the upper 50s.

Sunday will be very windy though, with gusts over 40 mph possible.

While it certainly will not be a nice weekend, I don’t think it will be quite as bad as everyone is making it out to be. Yes, the system is technically a “nor-easter”, but that label really means nothing to us for this weather system.

The Switch Flips

Since at least late April, I have been telling people to look for a rapid warm up on the back side of this cool, wet pattern. This seems to happen more often than not in May. We get a couple cool weeks, then, all of the sudden, it is summer.

This year looks like no exception.

Monday will remain breezy and a bit on the cool side with highs mostly near or just above 60 degrees. The sun will increase through the day and any precipitation should be limited to the far eastern areas during the early morning hours.

The temperature will then rocket upwards, with highs Tuesday in the upper 60s and low 70s, while Wednesday shoots into the low and mid 80s.

Temperatures will likely remain in the 70s and 80s into next weekend and possibly beyond.

Much of next week also looks dry, though a few thunderstorms may rumble through on Thursday.
