Blustery winds Monday will become stronger Monday night before a cold front moves through the Finger Lakes early Tuesday.

Strong Winds Buffet the Finger Lakes

Another batch of strong winds will develop over the Finger Lakes today before peaking Monday night as a developing storm system lifts into the central Great Lakes.

As usual, when an area of low pressure passes to the west of our region while strengthening, the weather responds with increasing winds over the Finger Lakes and western New York.

Wind gusts this morning will generally be in the 25 to 35 mph range before increasing slightly for the afternoon when a few areas could gust to 40 mph.

The strongest winds will move in tonight though when gusts to 45 mph will become more common and a few areas could gust as high as 50 mph.

The areas most likely to see 50 mph wind gusts would be over higher elevations of the Southern Tier, southern Finger Lakes, and Central New York.

With Halloween around the corner, make sure your decorations are secure and don’t blow around in the strong winds.

The wind will drop Tuesday morning as a cold front passes through the area. This cold front may bring a band of briefly moderate rain early Tuesday morning.

Otherwise, this storm system will not bring much rain to the Finger Lakes, with just some scattered showers Monday night and a few light showers Wednesday as the system pulls away.

Temperatures Generally Remain Above Normal

The strong winds Monday will be from the southeast. Already, temperatures this morning are near the normal daily high with most areas well into the 50s.

The southeast winds will help boost temperatures to around 70 degrees this afternoon, aided partially by at least some glimpses of the sun.

Temperatures will remain very mild tonight, only dropping into the 60s.

As the front moves through early Tuesday, temperatures may briefly fall back into the 50s, but some sunshine and a lack of cold air immediately behind the front will allow temperatures back into the upper 60s Tuesday afternoon.

Cooler air will slowly seep in Wednesday into Thursday, with highs Wednesday close to normal in the upper 50s while Thursday settles in the mid 50s.

By Friday, a new batch of south winds will bring warmer weather back in with highs returning to the 60s.
