Cold Front Brings Relief

A cold front has pushed through the Finger Lakes overnight and cooler air is working into the region.

North winds gusting to 20 mph will blow steadily throughout the day, delivering a fresh supply of cooler air.

Thick cloud cover will also be rather persistent across the region though a little sun may try to break through late in the afternoon.

Between the wind and clouds, temperatures will have little upward movement today.

Most areas are starting out in the upper 60s this morning. Temperatures may actually drop a little further during the morning hours before returning to the upper 60s and low 70s this afternoon.

Dewpoints will settle into the upper 50s and low 60s, which is low enough to not feel muggy, yet not quite low enough for that crisp, refreshing early fall feel.

Rain showers will be scattered across the Finger Lakes through the morning hours, but should cease by the afternoon. Rain amounts will be very light.

At least partial cloud cover will stick around through the overnight. Along with the moderate dewpoints, the clouds should keep overnight temperatures in the upper 50s to around 60 degrees.

Warm Weather Returns

The big cool down for the Finger Lakes will be brief though the return of warm weather will not be as intense as the heat of the last several days.

Friday will have a mix of sun and clouds. High pressure will be passing through northern New England, but the remnants of the cold front will linger across northern Pennsylvania and southern New England.

As the high moves out over the Atlantic, our winds will turn to the southeast by Friday afternoon. That will drive moisture and the remains of the front back towards us.

A few scattered showers and thunderstorms will pop up during the afternoon. Most of the rain will be light, but a couple slower moving downpours could be possible. Flash flooding is not expected at this time.

Showers will continue to drift through during Friday night with a couple lingering as late as Saturday morning. Skies Saturday will again be a mix of sun and clouds.

Temperatures Friday should be in the upper 70s. Low and mid 80s are more likely on Saturday and again on Sunday. Labor Day could reach the upper 80s.

With the increase in temperature will come a return to 70 degree dewpoints. The warm air and humidity will touch off a few scattered afternoon thunderstorms both Sunday and Monday.
