Temperature Drop

An area of low pressure moving into northern New England is delivering cooler air into the Finger Lakes.

Wednesday will be a breezy day behind this low with northwest winds gusting to 30 mph throughout the day. These winds will continue to feed cooler air into the region.

Most areas are starting near 40 or just above 40 degrees this morning. Afternoon high temperatures will depend on the dissipation of the cloud cover.

Thick clouds should remain in place through the morning hours. By the midday and early afternoon period, sunshine will start to take over in the western Southern Tier. Clearing skies will push north and east through the afternoon. Clouds will hold on longest for areas between Ithaca and Syracuse, where the sun may not shine much at all before it sets.

High temperatures should be near or just above 50 degrees for areas west of Cayuga Lake with some mid 50s in the Southern Tier. Mid and upper 40s are expected to the east of Cayuga Lake, especially in the higher elevations.

Precipitation will be unlikely today with just a spit of drizzle or a very brief shower between Ithaca and Cortland.

Skies tonight will be a mix of starlight and thin clouds as a second weather system passes to our south. Morning lows Thursday will be in the mid and upper 30s.

Parade of Weak Weather Systems

The weather system passing to our south will be too far away for any precipitation in the Finger Lakes. The clouds from the overnight should depart during the morning, leaving mostly sunny skies for much of Thursday.

Winds on Thursday will turn to the south as a third system tracks east across the southern Great Lakes. These winds will be very light with top gusts only around 15 mph. With the sunshine and southerly flow, temperatures should get a nice boost. Look for highs Thursday to reach the mid 60s.

Rain will move in near dawn Friday and continue through the morning. The afternoon should dry out with some late day sun working in from west to east. Temperatures will be in the mid 50s.

West-northwest winds will increase on Saturday with gusts of 35-45 mph possible. These will be chilly winds once again with high temperatures near or below 50 degrees.

Sunday’s weather continues to be highly uncertain as yet another small weather system moves into the region. If this system tracks overhead or just to the south, expect another cool, rainy day. If the system passes just to the north, it will be warmer and breezy. There is yet to be a strong signal for one scenario over the other.

Monday will likely be cloudy and cool with highs again struggling to reach 50 degrees. Another system will pass to the south late in the day, spreading some more rain into the area Monday night. The middle of next week looks dry with highs in the 50s before more active weather to end the week.
