Thursday Showers, Friday Sun

A cold front will move through the Finger Lakes region today with clouds and showers.

The area is dry early this morning, but precipitation is already entering Western New York. This precipitation is moving slow and should take a few more hours to get into the Finger Lakes.

The rain should arrive during the latter half of the morning and will stick around into the early afternoon. The rain may come down steadily for a couple hours before it lets up.

The radar trends and model projections this morning are more bullish on the rain than they were yesterday. Some areas could see over a half inch of rain, but others will still see lower amounts under a quarter inch.

After the main area of rain presses east early this afternoon, a few more scattered showers and maybe a heavier downpour will be possible late in the afternoon. This seems most likely along and north of a Rochester-Penn Yan-Ithaca line.

Outside of these last showers, some sun should work out this afternoon, helping temperatures approach 70 degrees.

Skies will clear overnight with some areas of patchy fog. Winds will be light but will swing around from the northwest to the south. Despite this, it will still be a chilly morning Friday with lows ranging throughout the 40s.

Friday will be sunny and comfortable with highs reaching the low 70s. A few scattered clouds will work in later in the day.

Weekend Weather Forecast and Beyond

Saturday morning will be much milder as warm air pushes north ahead of the next frontal system. Low temperatures should be in the low 60s with a few upper 50s in the Southern Tier.

At least partial sunshine is expected through the morning and into the afternoon. Some clouds and perhaps a couple showers cannot be ruled out.

By the afternoon, temperatures will soar well into the 80s and dewpoints will climb into the 60s. This will set the stage for showers and thunderstorms to develop as a front moves in late in the afternoon.

Precipitation is expected to be scattered and some areas may see little to no rain. Others will have a shot at some gusty thunderstorms thanks to strong winds in the low and mid levels of the atmosphere. Widespread severe weather is not expected.

Showers and storms will continue into the first part of the evening before dissipating. Sunday morning should start in the mid 50s with highs reaching the upper 60s. Skies will be sunny with a gentle north-northeast wind.

A few showers will be possible late in the day Monday as a warm front moves into the region. That front should lift north by Tuesday, opening us up to very warm air.

Highs Tuesday will push well into the 80s with sunny skies. Wednesday should reach the 80s as well, but some afternoon showers and storms will be possible.

Sometime Thursday, a powerful cold front should plow through with more rain. Temperatures will fall from the 70s to the 60s during the day, then well into the 40s by Friday morning. Some areas may have a hard time getting into the 50s at all Friday.

The cool weather looks as though it will stick around through next weekend and well into October.

    Hi Drew,
We will be visiting the Finger Lakes Monday the 30th and leaving on Thursday the 3rd. Sounds like it will be warm.We live in Hershey and it’s very warm here too. Could you give us a heads up on the temperatures? Not sure what clothes to bring. We love your blog and check it everyday just to see what’s happening in the Finger Lakes. Thanks for your time.

Hi Chris! Thanks for checking in! Here is what the temperatures are looking like right now. It will vary slightly depending on which part of the region, of course, but this should be a good guide:
      Monday- Upper 70s
      Tuesday- Low/Mid 80s
      Wednesday- Low 80s
Thursday- ??? depends on the front…80s if it is slow, 70s into the 60s if it is fast
