Cold Front Sinks South Today

Wednesday is off to a mild start across the Finger Lakes after a warm and muggy night.

Temperatures range through the mid and upper 60s, some 20-25 degrees above the normal morning temperatures for early October.

The warm weather’s stay is numbered in hours, however, as a strong cold front is poised just to the north of the region. Showers and a couple thunderstorms are moving through the Finger Lakes ahead of the front.

The front will make steady progress to the south and temperatures will suddenly drop into the 50s as the front passes. This should occur by mid-morning for the northern Finger Lakes and by the mid-afternoon for the Southern Tier.

Meanwhile, bouts of rain will continue to move through the region from time to time. It will not rain steadily all day, but it will be on again off again showers right into the evening. The threat for lightning and heavy downpours will be limited to early this morning.

Rain will taper off tonight and there should be several hours of mainly dry conditions overnight. Temperatures will settle around 50 degrees.

Rainy Weather Continues

The front will lift back north on Thursday, meaning another soggy day for the Finger Lakes. Showers will spread back north shortly after sunrise and should be a constant presence the remainder of the day.

The rain will once again not be steady, but the breaks between showers will be shorter tomorrow. A few brief downpours could be possible especially in the afternoon and evening.

Temperatures will spend most of Thursday in the 50s but should briefly rise into the low 60s during the evening hours. However, winds will quickly turn from the south to the west and then northwest overnight and the cold air will win out.

By Friday morning, temperatures will be in the mid and upper 40s. Thick clouds and a few lake effect rain showers will be likely. The showers will diminish through the morning, but the clouds will remain in place until after sunset. High temperatures will struggle to get much beyond 50 degrees as a result.

Clearing skies Friday evening will lead to the coldest temperatures yet this season by far for Saturday morning. Widespread frost and isolated freeze conditions are likely with temperatures ranging through the 30s. Areas that typically see warmer temperatures on cold mornings due to lake influences should stay near or just above 40 degrees.

Saturday will be our one shot for sunshine in the upcoming time period and we should be able to take full advantage of the opportunity. Expect sun-filled skies from start to finish on Saturday. The sun will help temperatures recover some from the cold morning with highs in the mid and upper 50s.

A slow moving front will move into the region for Sunday with the return of scattered rain showers. Temperatures will get a boost from south winds ahead of the front and may approach 70 degrees.

The front will then stall out with a corridor of steady, heavy rain on Monday. This may set up to the east, but it is too early to count on that happening. At the very least, expect more showers on Monday, especially in the morning, but it could end up being a very rainy day.
