Series of Cold Fronts
Two cold fronts have moved through the Finger Lakes since the mid-week warmth, and two more are still to come.
The first front Thursday night knocked temperatures back to the 50s yesterday. Last night’s front will send us back further today.
Northwest winds behind this front will blow at 5-10 mph today. These winds will bring in cooler air, but sunny skies will counteract some of the cooling.
Highs will range from just above 40 in the Southern Tier between Bath and Binghamton, with upper 30s to near 40 through much of the Finger Lakes. Higher elevations in both the west and east will be in the mid 30s.
Winds will turn to the southwest this evening ahead of the next front. Skies will remain mostly clear this evening, but temperatures will remain in the 30s, even rising after an initial drop after sunset.
After midnight, the next front will move through with just a few clouds. Winds will turn back to the northwest at 10-15 mph through the late-morning hours Sunday. Temperatures will drop back to the low 30s by dawn Sunday, then rise to the mid or upper 30s by midday.
The final front will move from north to south during the late morning and early afternoon. Scattered snow bursts will accompany the front with little to no accumulation. Winds will noticeably increase, with gusts over 40 mph for several hours. Afternoon temperatures will fall back through the 30s with 20s widespread by sunset.
Next Week’s Weather
Another sunny day is in store for Monday, but the core of the cold will be settling into the Finger Lakes. Compared to the 65-70 degree highs of Thursday, Monday will be as much as 40-45 degrees colder.
Mid and upper 20s are likely along I-90 and through the eastern half of the Finger Lakes. Highs may just make it to 30 degrees through the Southern Tier and west of I-390.
A decaying weather system will approach on Tuesday, leading to an increase in clouds late Monday. Some light precipitation may sneak in for Tuesday, but should not amount to much as the system falls apart. Temperatures Tuesday may reach the low 40s if this system falls apart fast enough and skies stay sunny.
Highs Wednesday should be into the 40s or even low 50s with dry and sunny conditions.
The best chance for precipitation will come late in the week as a slow moving cold front passes by. Precipitation should start as rain on Thursday, but whether it stays wet and not white is a question worth monitoring this week.
The weather pattern looks to take a milder, quieter approach once again beyond that, but time will tell exactly how that plays out.
