Warm Front
An area of low pressure over the Midwest is sending a warm front toward the Finger Lakes.
Rain out ahead of the front has already spread into the region. The area of widespread showers will gradually track east-northeast through today.
The rain will be light and most areas should see under a quarter-inch of rainfall. By the afternoon, rain will be exiting the region from west to east. A little sunshine may even appear over the northwestern Finger Lakes before the day is done.
Winds will be from the southeast at 10-15 mph. This wind direction and the chances for some late sun favor higher temperatures in the Rochester area, where highs could reach the mid 60s. Highs will approach 60 degrees as far east as Geneva, Penn Yan, Bath, and Wellsville. Further east, upper and mid 50s are more likely.
Winds will become more southerly overnight, holding temperatures around 50 degrees, even as skies gradually clear. There could also be a couple more showers near Lake Ontario around midnight. A rumble of thunder cannot be totally ruled out.
The gates will be flung wide open for warm air on Thursday. Skies will be a mix of sun and clouds and southwest winds will blow at around 10 mph. Highs will soar into the low and mid 70s, which may be enough to set a couple of new daily record highs.
Clouds will increase late in the day and a few stray evening showers cannot be ruled out. Temperatures Thursday night will remain well into the 50s.
Next Weather Systems
The chances for rain will increase after midnight Friday night. Scattered showers and probably a few thunderstorms will move through the area, exiting to the northeast around dawn.
A period of sunshine is likely Friday morning, helping temperatures race well into the 60s. South winds will be increasing, but will not peak until a late morning cold front moves through.
With this front, winds will turn to the southwest and then west. Gusts of 55-65 mph seem likely and should continue well into the afternoon. Temperatures will also drop in a hurry with the front, falling back through the 50s and into the 40s by the late afternoon.
Very little in the way of precipitation is expected with the front, though.
The weather will settle down for Saturday with a mix of sun and clouds and much lighter winds. Top gusts will be a very normal 20-25 mph. Most of the region will be around 50 degrees, though higher elevations will stick to the 40s, and mid 50s will be possible from Bath to Binghamton in the Southern Tier.
Another low will move into the area on Sunday, spreading rain showers and more wind into the region. The rain will especially focus on the morning, though showers are likely to linger into the afternoon.
Winds will be from the west, then northwest, with gusts over 40 mph possible. Temperatures will reach the low and mid 50s by midday, then drop through the 40s for the afternoon.
Monday will be stuck with highs in the 40s with a mix of sun and clouds. Winds will still be on the blustery side, especially in the I-81 corridor.
The wind will turn to the south on Tuesday, but will once more be strong with gusts over 40 mph. After some early sun, clouds will increase and showers will arrive late. Temperatures will get a boost back into the 50s.
Wednesday may reach the 60s ahead of another cold front with cooler temperatures for the end of next week. This cool down should be brief with more warm weather as we head deeper into April.
