Stalled Low Pressure

For over a week, low pressure has been meandering from Colorado, into the Midwest, and now is slowly spinning over Canada between New York and Michigan.

Little has changed in the atmosphere since yesterday’s rainy day, and today should follow suit with a soggy afternoon.

For this morning, just a few stray showers dot the region. This will continue to be the case until the late morning, when the showers will start to increase. By the afternoon, they should morph into a widespread band of rain, similar to yesterday, only not as heavy.

This band will stretch from southeast to northwest, centered roughly from Binghamton to Ithaca to Geneva to Rochester. The band should become wide enough to encompass most if not all the Finger Lakes region.

The constant overcast and afternoon rain will prevent temperatures from rising more than a couple degrees today. The best chance for reaching 50 degrees will be on the fringes of the band, mostly south and west of I-390 and in the Syracuse area. Between Binghamton and Ithaca, highs may only be in the mid 40s.

After sunset, the rain will quickly dissipate, tapering back to a few stray showers overnight.

By tomorrow morning, the low over Canada will have split, with one piece heading out over the Atlantic, and the other piece retreating northwestward toward the Upper Great Lakes.

This will lead to drier conditions on Tuesday, with low chances for a few isolated afternoon sprinkles. Clouds are likely through the morning, but some breaks of sun should gradually work through the overcast.

High temperatures Tuesday will reach the upper 50s and low 60s. Clearing skies overnight will send temperatures into the upper 30s and low 40s by Wednesday morning.

Wednesday will start sunny before afternoon fair weather clouds bubble up. A stray shower cannot be totally ruled out, but most areas will stay dry. Wednesday should be the warmest day of the week with highs in the low and mid 60s.

Cool, Active Pattern Remains

Another slow moving low pressure system will impact our region later in the week. This low is expected to develop over the Mid-Atlantic on Wednesday night and sit along the coast of New Jersey throughout Thursday. By Friday, the low will redevelop a bit further to the east, and even by Saturday, it will remain just off the coast of New England.

Rain will spread across the Finger Lakes on Thursday, making for another soggy day. High temperatures will mostly be in the low and mid 40s.

Early on Thursday morning, and again after sunset Thursday evening, higher elevation snow may mix in. A few hill tops could even see a couple inches Thursday night. Most areas will see temperatures in the mid and upper 30s Thursday night, limiting the potential for accumulations, even if flakes mix in with the rain.

On Friday, the precipitation will probably not be as steady as on Thursday, but it will remain a cloudy, cool, and showery day. Snow will continue to be possible into early Thursday morning before precipitation turns back to all rain. High temperatures on Friday will again end up between 40-45 degrees.

By Saturday, the low is expected to be far enough to the east that precipitation will be unlikely. Clouds early in the day will eventually move out, allowing highs back into the 50s.

Next week looks to remain cool and active before warmer air may start to move back in for the end of April.
