Dog Days of Summer
A hot and humid weather pattern will persist through the workweek, also bringing chances for afternoon pop-up showers and storms.
Today will be the day with the lowest chance for rain, though a few early morning showers dot the eastern reaches of the Finger Lakes this morning.
These showers are along a subtle boundary that separates hot and humid air moving into our region, and cooler air coming in off the Atlantic and into New England. The showers should drift east and dissipate early this morning as the boundary weakens.
South and southeast winds near or under 5 mph will keep warm air in place underneath sunshine mixing with fair weather clouds. No additional precipitation is expected today outside of perhaps a very isolated stray shower in the higher elevations of the Southern Tier late this afternoon.
Temperatures will be a couple degrees warmer than yesterday with highs around 90 in the warmer regions of the northwestern quadrant of the Finger Lakes. Mid and upper 80s will be widespread throughout the rest of the region.
Dewpoints will range from 65 to 70, making it feel rather muggy once again. A little bit of wildfire smoke may also pass through this afternoon. This smoke will mainly be in the mid-levels of the atmosphere.
Skies will be mostly clear tonight with lows in the upper 60s to around 70 degrees.
Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday will all be hot and humid with highs around 90 degrees for many areas. Exactly how hot it gets each day will partially depend on the development of afternoon showers and storms.
Rain Chances
For the mid-week period, the rain chances will not be overly high with little in the atmosphere to trigger showers and storms.
Still, it will be hot and humid enough that subtle factors, including geography and lake breezes, may be enough to pop some afternoon action.
The chances for rain on Tuesday will mostly be restricted to the late afternoon and evening. Many places will probably not see rain.
Wednesday may have an even small chance for rain, primarily coming in the late afternoon as a few isolated showers and storms.
By Thursday, the rain chances may creep upward some, but it still does not look like a widespread rain event.
Friday by far has the best chance for showers and storms as a potent cold front marches into the area. This will be worth watching for at least some isolated stronger storms.
Fresh, cooler air will flood in behind this system for the weekend. Sunshine and dry weather are likely with highs in the mid 70s and overnight lows in the mid 60s Friday night and mid 50s Saturday night.
Temperatures beyond the weekend look to settle into a near-normal pattern with highs in the 75-85 degree range.
