Locally Heavy Rainfall

A stalled-out frontal boundary will serve as a focal point for rain once again today.

A wave of energy moving along the front this morning has some areas of showers in the Finger Lakes to start off Monday morning. These will continue to push through the area and should mostly depart by the mid to late morning.

New activity will start to develop during the midday and early afternoon hours and will peak in intensity and coverage during the mid and late afternoon.

Like yesterday and the day before, clusters of rain with embedded heavy downpours are likely. Locally heavy rain may lead to some sporadic flooding issues. Both Saturday and Sunday saw areas of flash flooding, and a flash flood warning or two may be needed again today.

The best chance for heavy rain will be roughly across the southern half of the region, closer to the actual frontal boundary. Many of these areas can only take an inch or two of rainfall in 1-3 hours before flooding begins, and there are levels that could be met today.

Temperatures will mostly be in the upper 70s today with dewpoints in the upper 60s to near 70. Winds will be light.

The front will start to sink southward this evening, taking most of the precipitation out of the area. A few showers will still be possible overnight and into Tuesday morning.

Overnight temperatures will again be in the mid and upper 60s. Dewpoints will also remain well into the 60s for Tuesday, but the atmosphere as a whole will begin to dry out. Only a brief, stray shower is expected Tuesday afternoon, making the 4th of July mainly dry for most areas.

A light northwest wind will blow on Tuesday with speeds under 10 mph. This may bring in some very low levels of smoke with little to no impact on air quality expected.

Temperatures on Tuesday will top out in the low 80s.

Hot, then Storms

High pressure will pass overhead on Wednesday, keeping winds light and skies sunny. Only some small fair weather clouds are expected during the daytime heating cycle.

Temperatures will start out Wednesday in the mid 60s and will warm well into the 80s. On average, most areas will be in the mid 80s, but a few of the warmest locations could already be flirting with 90 degrees.

By Thursday, the high will be to our east, turning winds to the south. The wind will remain light, with speeds only around 5 mph. Still, it will be enough to increase temperatures further.

Many areas will be around 90 degrees on Thursday. Daytime dewpoints will be in the low 60s, so the heat index should not be much higher than the actual temperature.

No rain is expected with sun and small fair weather clouds.

A cold front will move through the area on Friday. Showers and thunderstorms will be likely but may be limited to just a quick-moving line of storms immediately along the front. Conditions do not look favorable for a big severe weather event at this time, but the front will be strong enough that it will bear watching throughout the week.

Temperatures will retreat to around 80 degrees on Friday and Saturday with low 80s on Sunday. The weekend is uncertain at this point. A few showers and storms may linger behind the front on Saturday, with the potential for a new system to bring more activity on Sunday.

It looks as though temperatures will continue to be around 80 degrees into next week with more active weather possible towards the middle of the week.
