Early-Mid Week Weather
A small area of high pressure over the Mid-Atlantic has most of the Finger Lakes region off to a clear and cold start to the week.
The clear skies and mercifully light winds have allowed temperatures down into the single digits in many areas. For most, this is the first time this cold all winter.
Sunshine will stick with us for much of the day, but eventually some thin clouds will increase from the south this afternoon as a weather system approaches.
Winds will remain light today with top gusts under 20 mph for most. Afternoon highs will only make it to the low and mid 20s this afternoon.
Clouds will thicken this evening and overnight. Light snow will move in from the south during the predawn hours. This snow will fall lightly throughout Tuesday, finally moving out around sunset.
Accumulations will be on the order of 1-4 inches, with the highest amounts in the southeastern half of the region. The snow should be light enough to prevent any major travel issues.
Temperatures will drop to the mid and upper 10s overnight, then rise back to the low and mid 20s for Tuesday afternoon. West and northwest winds may gust as high as 25 mph Tuesday afternoon before dropping during the evening.
Outside of some lake effect clouds northeast of Lake Erie, skies should clear out Tuesday night. With some fresh snow and chilly southwest winds, morning lows Wednesday should be back into the single digits.
Wednesday itself will have a mix of sun and clouds, though it will probably not be quite as sunny as today. Highs will fail to reach 20 degrees in most areas.
Late Week Snow
The second half of the week will also feature snow, though once again, most of it will be light.
Thursday will start off cloudy, but snow should not arrive until later in the afternoon. Like Tuesday, this is expected to be a widespread, light snow. Temperatures Thursday will start in the low 10s and rise to the mid 20s.
Light snow will continue into and throughout Friday. Another 1-4 inches is the most likely amount of accumulation. Temperatures will be just a bit different than Thursday, with overnight lows in the mid 10s and highs in the low 20s.
The low pressure responsible for this snow will pull away Friday night, opening the door for another shot of cold air. Saturday will start with temperatures in the single digits and highs may not get above the mid 10s.
This cold air will move in on northwest winds, resulting in a spray of lake effect snow throughout much of the area on Saturday. Accumulations will be greatest near Lake Ontario, where several inches may be possible.
The wind will pick up on Saturday with a few gusts reaching 30 mph. With the cold temperatures, the snow is likely to be light and fluffy, so these winds will create reduced visibility and areas of blowing and drifting snow.
The lake effect will wind down Sunday and the day may end with some sunshine. Temperatures will be slightly warmer than Saturday.
High pressure will slide to the east by next Monday, resulting in a sudden and significant warming. High temperatures should be well into the 30s on Monday with 40s possible by Tuesday. These milder temperatures will most likely stick around throughout next week.
