Tuesday Snow, Quiet Wednesday
A weak area of low pressure along the Mid-Atlantic coast is throwing steady snow into the Finger Lakes this morning.
This low will strengthen a little as it tracks northeast. It should be near Cape Cod this evening.
Snow will fall steadily through the morning and midday hours, gradually tapering off during the afternoon. By 3 or 4 PM, the bulk of the snow should be to the east, though scattered snow showers will continue into the evening.
While the snow will be steady and the temperatures cold, accumulations will be light today. Areas north and west of roughly a Dansville to Geneva to Fulton line will generally see less than 2 inches of snow.
The best chances for 3 inches will be from Elmira to Ithaca to Cortland and points eastward, though not all these areas will break past 3 inches.
Areas through the middle of the region between these zones will see around 2 inches.
Temperatures will rise a handful of degrees to a high in the low to perhaps mid 20s. A little sun may poke out before it sets if the snow moves out quick enough.
Winds will be light from the west while the snow falls, but will pick up from the northwest late in the afternoon. Wind speeds at that time will be around 10 mph with gusts around 25 mph. The wind will be slightly weaker during the evening and will gradually turn to the southwest.
As the winds turn to the southwest, snow showers from Lake Erie will lift north and out of the area. The overnight should be mostly quiet with partial clearing, especially across the southern half of the region. Any areas that see clear skies will drop into the mid and upper 0s, possibly with a few colder pockets. Areas that stay cloudy, most likely in the north, will be near or just above 10 degrees.
Wednesday will be a quiet day with clouds to the north and some sun to the south. Even that sunshine will mix with clouds, though.
Winds will remain from the southwest, increasing to 10-15 mph during the afternoon. A few gusts over 30 mph will be possible across Genesee, Monroe, northwestern Ontario, and western Wayne counties.
Most areas will not reach 20 degrees on Wednesday with highs in the mid and upper 10s. Increasing clouds, steady winds, and the arrival of some warmer air will keep temperatures in the low and mid 10s Wednesday night.
Late Week, Weekend Weather
Another batch of light snow will build into the region Thursday afternoon. Compared to today’s snow, the snow on Thursday should be lighter and less steady. Most areas will see around or under an inch of accumulation.
Temperatures will get a small boost with highs reaching the mid 20s. Upper 10s are expected Thursday night as the snow lingers on.
Friday is a bit unclear in how it will evolve. The widespread snow should come to an end early, possibly before sunrise even. Late in the day, some lake effect off Lake Ontario may develop. But most of the day could end up relatively quiet.
Temperatures will not be much cooler during the day Friday, with highs in the low 20s. However, colder air will return during the evening, leading to overnight lows in the 0s and low 10s. How and where the lake effect develops will influence how cold it gets.
Lake effect snow will persist into Saturday and will be joined by some blustery northwest winds. Wind gusts may peak over 30 mph, leading to reduced visibility and blowing snow. Temperatures will top out in the mid and upper 10s, which may make it a bit more difficult to keep roads clear.
Travel on Saturday should not be impossible, but may need some extra time and caution.
Lake snows should wind down early Sunday morning as winds begin to shift. Some afternoon sun may even come out. Temperatures will make it into the mid 20s.
A quick turn to warmer weather is expected early next week, with mid 30s for highs on Monday and temperatures near or above 40 degrees for the rest of the week. Precipitation will be most likely late next week.
