Transitioning Weather
An incoming push of warmer air will rub up against lingering cold air, producing some wintry weather before taking over for the latter half of the week.
To start, the week is cold with clear skies throughout the Finger Lakes Monday morning. A few pockets are starting out the day all the way down near 0 degrees, but most of the region is between 5-15 degrees.
Clouds will gradually build in from the west this morning and should become thicker for the afternoon. No precipitation is expected during the daytime hours.
A steady southwest wind with speeds slightly over 5 mph will help push temperatures into the low and mid 30s this afternoon.
A few brief snow showers will be possible this evening and overnight, but should not amount to much. There could be a few pockets of freezing drizzle early Tuesday morning, leading to a few slick areas.
Nighttime temperatures will only drop a little, ranging from around 30 degrees in the north to the upper 20s in the south. A few mid 20s will be possible in Central New York.
Snow will increase from west to east during the latter half of Tuesday morning. Some freezing rain or sleet may mix in at first across the Southern Tier. The snow should fall steadily through the remainder of the daylight hours.
Afternoon highs on Tuesday will be in the mid 30s. This should help keep roads in decent shape, even as an inch or two accumulates.
Tuesday evening, the snow will gradually taper off to showers and should change over to rain and freezing rain. Freezing rain will be most likely across the Southern Tier and Central New York, but it is important to not to focus too much on those labels. There will be pockets of ice outside of those areas, and there will be areas within those regions that see just rain.
January Thaw
By the midday hours Wednesday, enough warm air should be in place to keep precipitation all rain. The rain may become widespread and steady again through the morning and into the afternoon.
The rain will taper off for a time later Wednesday and Wednesday night.
Another batch of widespread rain will build in on Thursday. This rain will be heaviest in the morning and some areas could see over a half-inch of rainfall.
Light southerly winds will persist throughout Wednesday and Thursday.
Temperatures on Wednesday will push into the low 40s. Nighttime temperatures will only drop to around 40 degrees.
Thursday’s highs will push into the mid 40s with little drop in temperature Thursday night. Temperatures may even rise slightly overnight.
Friday will be the warmest day of the week, with some areas breaking above 50 degrees. A few showers will be possible in the morning.
Temperatures should slide back towards the seasonal averages over the weekend. Highs will be around 40 degrees on Saturday and into the mid 30s on Sunday. Both days look cloudy with a few spits of precipitation here or there, but nothing significant.
Next week looks cooler, but not cold, with near-average temperatures in the 30s. Warmer weather will be possible again in early February, but there are hints in some of the longer range global weather patterns of another shot of cold for the latter half of February.
Only time will tell if that comes to fruition.
