Mid-Week Warm Up
Satellite imagery early this morning shows a sharp cutoff between clear skies and areas of cloudiness.
The clouds are mainly situated over the eastern and far southern portions of the region, resulting from light southeasterly winds at the surface bringing in Atlantic moisture.
For the rest of the Finger Lakes, where the day will start out sunny, dry air from northwest winds aloft is winning out.
The balance between cloudy and sunny skies will ebb and flow this morning, but the overall trend should be for clouds to increase by the afternoon. The further northwest in the region you are, the longer the sun should hold out.
With the southerly flow, temperatures will be on the rise today. Most areas should at least get near 40 degrees, if not into the low 40s. Areas east of Cayuga Lake in Tompkins, southern Cayuga, and Cortland counties have the lowest chance at reaching 40 degrees thanks to the cloud cover and higher elevations.
Partly to mostly cloudy skies will be present this evening before the entire region turns overcast. Winds will turn to the southwest, keeping overnight lows near 30 degrees.
A weak system will move in from the northwest on Thursday, spreading a few rain showers into the area. These will be most likely across the northern half of the region during the afternoon, though anywhere may see a shower at almost any time.
Temperatures on Thursday will stay near 40 degrees during the day, then drop to the low 30s during the night. This will change some of the rain showers over to flurries. No snow accumulation is expected.
A few showers and flurries will linger into Friday with slightly cooler air settling into place. High temperatures will reach the mid 30s.
Weekend Weather and Next Week’s Forecast
There will be many chances for sunshine this weekend and next week as a dry weather pattern dominates the northeastern United States and Great Lakes region.
Skies will turn out mixed on Saturday, starting with more clouds than sun but ending with mostly sunny skies. Light northwest winds will gradually turn to the west, then southwest with speeds around or under 5 mph.
Temperatures on Saturday will start out in the mid 20s but rise to the mid and upper 30s.
Sunday may have more clouds than Saturday as winds turn back to the northwest, then north-northwest. Time will tell if any stray flurries accompany these lake effect clouds, but no significant precipitation will fall.
Morning lows Sunday will be in the mid 20s. Afternoon highs will be in the mid 30s.
Dry air will move in on nearly calm northeast winds on Monday. This should help skies clear for a mostly sunny day. Morning lows will be in the low 20s with afternoon highs in the mid 30s.
Winds will turn more southerly on Tuesday as a series of weak, moisture starved fronts approach. These will bring in a few clouds, but precipitation is not expected. Morning lows will again be in the low 20s, but afternoon highs may jump to near 40 degrees.
The rest of the week should be mild with highs in the 40s. There will continue to be a mix of sun and clouds without any precipitation.
It will not be until the latter half of next weekend that precipitation chances will start to notably increase again.
