Turning Warmer
High pressure passed overhead last night and is now heading to the east of our region.
Clear skies, calm winds, and a bit of snow cover teamed up to send temperatures into the 10s and 0s overnight.
Now, during the daytime, a light south wind with speeds up to 5 mph, but often less, will help the clear skies warm temperatures. By the afternoon, temperatures will range from the low 40s across the southern and western Finger Lakes, to the mid and upper 30s across the north and east.
Skies will remain clear throughout the day with scarcely even a stay, thin cloud to be seen.
Clear skies will persist this evening. After midnight, a few scattered clouds will drift into the region.
The south wind will become better established tonight, reaching speeds up to 10 mph. This will counteract the radiational cooling beneath the clear skies. Overnight lows will settle in the mid and upper 20s as a result. A few pockets of low 20s and upper 10s will be possible in the typically colder areas in and around Cortland County.
Wednesday will have plenty of sunshine as well, but scattered clouds will mix in throughout the day. Late in the afternoon, more substantial cloud cover will begin to build in.
South winds around 10 mph will persist throughout Wednesday, nudging temperatures up. Cortland county will be in the low 40s, while most of the rest of the region settles in the mid 40s. Upper 40s to near 50 degrees will be possible in the Genesee Valley and the Rochester area.
A Bit Unsettled
Clouds will continue to increase Wednesday night and a stray spit of rain or snow cannot be ruled out. Precipitation will become more likely Thursday morning. Temperatures will be split across the region, with roughly the northwestern half above freezing and the southeastern half below freezing.
Mixed and changing precipitation types should result, eventually becoming all rain. Precipitation should remain light, so travel conditions will generally remain in good condition. Widespread mid 40s will dominate the afternoon, with the Genesee Valley and Rochester area again in the upper 40s to near 50 degrees.
Precipitation will linger into Thursday Night and early Friday, turning back towards a mixture of rain and snow as temperatures drop to the mid 30s regionwide. The precipitation should then end sometime Friday morning.
Temperatures on Friday will manage to reach about 40 degrees, but winds will turn to the northwest during the afternoon and the north Friday evening. Wind speeds will increase Friday night and remain near 10 mph from the north through Saturday.
This may produce a few stray lake effect snow showers early Saturday, but more notable will be a one-day cold snap. Temperatures will start Saturday in the mid 10s, rise to the mid 20s, then drop back to the mid 10s again Saturday night and early Sunday.
Winds will swing around to the south on Sunday, promptly pushing highs back towards or above 40 degrees. Clouds will mix with a little sunshine, and no precipitation is expected.
The early part of next week will be quiet with building temperatures. Warm but unsettled weather is likely for the middle of the week. Another brief, and less substantial, cool down is expected late in the week before temperatures bounce right back up.
