Low Pressure Passing By

A pair of low pressure systems, one passing to the north, the other to the south, will bring unsettled weather to the area today.

Already this morning, some scattered showers and a few spits of snow and sleet have moved into portions of the Finger Lakes. Precipitation will remain scattered throughout the morning as it completely goes over to rain.

South winds will push temperatures up to a high in the low and mid 40s during the first half of the afternoon.

Precipitation will increase during the early to mid afternoon, but there will still be occasional breaks. This will all fall as rain.

The steadiest, most widespread precipitation will develop this evening and through the overnight. This, too, should mostly be rain. However, there may be just enough cold air for some pockets of snow and sleet this evening. This will mostly be the case over the Southern Tier and southeastern Finger Lakes.

These same areas may also turn over to all snow before the precipitation ends during the predawn hours of Friday. No more than a coating of accumulation is expected, if even that.

No major travel issues are expected either from mixed precipitation tonight or snow early Friday morning.

Overnight temperatures will mostly stick to the mid 30s with pockets of low 30s.

Most of the precipitation should exit to the east by sunrise Friday, but a few lingering showers early on cannot be ruled out. There should be some breaks of sun here and there through the later morning and afternoon hours.

Late in the afternoon, a cold front will approach, popping up a few scattered showers. These will turn to flurries, then transition to a brief period of lake effect snow Friday night. With winds becoming northerly, the lake effect will be possible throughout the region. Accumulations should be limited to under an inch.

Weekend Weather and Warm Next Week

The north winds Friday night will be blustery and will quickly deliver a shot of cold air.

Morning lows on Saturday will be in the low and mid 10s while afternoon highs will struggle into the low 20s. Wind speeds will be near 10 mph with gusts around 25 mph, making it feel like the single digits for much of the day.

There will be increasing sunshine on Saturday at least, with morning clouds giving way to clear skies.

It will not take long Saturday evening for temperatures to return to the low and mid 10s, but winds will turn to the south and mostly hold temperatures in place overnight.

The south wind combined with a good deal of sunshine on Sunday will lead to rapid warming, pushing highs back into the low 40s.

A potent weather system is expected to develop over the middle of the nation early next week and lift into the Great Lakes by the mid-week. This should push more warm air toward our region, and temperatures could make a run at 60 degrees by Wednesday.

This system will also bring a prolonged windy period, likely peaking on Wednesday. Rain will also move in, possibly ending as some snow as another brief cold shot takes hold for the end of the week, likely on Friday.

Like the cold air on Saturday, any cold air that moves in late next week will be quick to depart. The first week of March looks potentially very warm.
