Weekend Weather Forecast
An area of low pressure riding along a slow moving frontal boundary will depart the area this morning.
Some rain is still falling across the southern half of the region early Friday morning. These showers should depart within a couple of hours by mid-morning.
Otherwise, it will be dry today, albeit quite cloudy. If there is any sun, it will not come until late in the day. Even then, it will be quite limited, if it shows at all.
Winds will be from the northwest behind the departing low with speeds up to 10 mph. These winds will keep temperatures down today, with many areas 15-20 degrees cooler than yesterday. Higher elevations will be in the mid and upper 40s, many areas will be around 50 degrees, and the warmer valley pockets will be in the low 50s.
A few more scattered showers will be possible tonight as a secondary frontal boundary drifts through. These will be few and far between and should be out of the region by sunrise Saturday morning.
Saturday will start with morning lows in the mid 30s. Some sun mixing with the clouds and southwest winds up to 10 mph will nudge temperatures into the low and mid 50s.
Another cold front will move through Saturday night with a period of rain. Scattered showers will continue into Sunday, but the bulk of the rain will come overnight.
Sunday’s temperatures will start in the upper 30s to near 40 degrees and rise to a high in the mid 40s. West-northwest winds will become blustery, with speeds up to 15 mph and gusts of 30-40 mph.
The wind will turn to the west or even southwest Sunday night. These winds will keep any lake effect snow that starts to develop off the Great Lakes out of our area, for the time being. It will continue to turn cooler, though, with overnight lows mainly in the upper 20s.
Cooler Weather Next Week
Winds will still be a bit blustery on Monday but will probably not quite match Sunday’s speeds and gusts.
The wind direction will gradually turn to the west, then northwest, allowing lake effect snow showers to move into the region off Lake Ontario. These will be most likely in the afternoon and evening hours.
Daytime accumulations are not expected with temperatures rising into the upper 30s, but some areas may see a light coating Monday night as temperatures fall to the mid 20s.
Lake effect flurries will linger into Tuesday morning but should retreat to the north during the day as winds turn southwesterly.
The wind shift will be ahead of an area of low pressure that will bring some widespread light snow through Tuesday night into early Wednesday. Light accumulations will be possible.
Gusty winds and areas of lake effect will be possible during the day on Wednesday. Some additional daytime snow accumulation will be possible, especially in the higher elevations of the eastern Finger Lakes. Highs will be in the low and mid 30s.
Lake snows will gradually wind down Wednesday night or very early Thursday. Temperatures should remain cool with highs likely sticking to the 30s on Thursday.
The weather next weekend is uncertain, with a potential storm system moving through the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast.
There are signs of some warmer weather again during the final days of March.
