Early Week Weather
After a week of winter last week, temperatures this week will be warmer, and precipitation will be hard to come by.
A strong area of high pressure resides north of New England this morning and stretches south along the Eastern Seaboard. Meanwhile, a large storm system is lifting north through the middle of the nation.
The high will keep our weather sunny today as southerly flow warms our temperatures. Only a few passing thin clouds are expected here and there, doing little to block the availability of sunshine.
Surface winds today will be from the southeast with speeds up to 10 mph. Winds aloft will be more southerly, helping to push the warmer air into our area.
Afternoon highs will be warmest in the mid 50s in the valleys of the Southern Tier and Genesee Valleys. Surrounding areas will be around 50 degrees. For areas east of Cayuga Lake, highs will be in the mid and upper 40s, in part due to the snowpack from the weekend and in part because southeast winds warm the aforementioned areas easier due to topography.
Clear skies will accompany the full moon for a bright evening, but clouds will build in after midnight, filtering the moonlight. Southeast winds will continue, resulting in temperatures ranging from the mid 30s west of Canandaigua Lake to the mid and upper 20s east of Cayuga Lake.
The daytime hours on Tuesday will be dry, but clouds will thicken throughout the day. Some filtered sunshine will still be possible during the morning. By evening, a few stray rain showers will drift through.
Winds will be more southerly on Tuesday, pushing lower elevations above 55 degrees and higher elevations to near 55 degrees.
The best chance for rain will come after midnight Tuesday night. Even then, the rain should be light and sporadic, and some areas may not see any. A few spits of rain and drizzle may linger into Wednesday morning.
Overnight lows on Tuesday will mainly stick between 40-45 degrees.
Late Week Weather
The showers Tuesday night will be associated with a subtle warm front that will move through. Southerly flow will persist into Wednesday and temperatures will continue to rise.
Look for highs on Wednesday to push into the upper 50s and low 60s.
A few more spits of rain will pass through late Wednesday associated with a cold front. Most areas will probably not see precipitation with the cold front.
Temperatures on Thursday will respond by starting in the mid 30s and rising to a high in the mid and upper 40s. No precipitation is expected and there should be a good amount of sunshine. Northwest winds will blow with speeds up to 10 mph.
On Friday, northwest winds will increase to over 10 mph and gusts over 25 mph. Temperatures will be a bit cooler with morning lows in the upper 20s and low 30s and afternoon highs in the low and mid 40s.
Skies on Friday should be quite sunny with just a few passing clouds. Saturday may have a bit more in the way of clouds, but many should be thin and will still allow plenty of sunshine. Temperatures may be a couple degrees warmer on Saturday with lighter winds.
Easter Sunday should continue the trend of dry weather and mixed skies, though there is some uncertainty with a weather system starting to approach the region. Temperatures will continue to hover in the same general range as Friday and Saturday.
Next week is looking cool and active, but the details are still uncertain. At this point, there is probably slightly better than a 50-50 shot at seeing at least some snowflakes in the air at some point.
Temperatures should start to rise late next week and weekend. Mild air should be in place by Eclipse Day on April 8th, but there is zero confidence in even attempting to discern the cloud cover for the day at this point.
