Early Week Weather

The longstanding pattern of active weather across the Finger Lakes will let up this week with mostly dry conditions.

High pressure centered over Arkansas extends northeast into and through our region this morning, keeping our weather today quiet.

Skies will be sunny most of the day today. There may be a few patches of clouds here and there this morning, but most of these should burn off before noon.

Winds will be out of the northwest, but not quite as blustery as they were over the weekend. Wind speeds today should remain under 10 mph with gusts around 20 mph.

Temperatures will continue to be near or a touch below the daily averages, but still very typical for mid to late April in our region. Most areas will be into the mid 50s this afternoon with higher elevations in the low 50s.

Tonight should not be as cold as last night, thanks to a gradual increase in cloud cover and the development of a light south wind. Still, most areas should find themselves in the 30s overnight with pockets of near or below freezing temperatures across the Southern Tier and into Cortland County.

Clouds will increase and thicken on Tuesday as a low pressure tracks across southern Canada. This system may bring a few rain showers in during the latter half of the afternoon, increasing from northwest to southeast.

South-southwest winds will increase with speeds around 15 mph by the afternoon. Wind gusts will frequently exceed 30 mph, but will probably not reach 40 mph. The wind will substantially weaken after sunset.

The wind will help drive temperatures up and it should be the warmest day of the work week with widespread low and mid 60s.

Steady light rain will move across the region Tuesday evening and Tuesday night. Rainfall amounts by Wednesday morning should be in the order of a quarter to a third of an inch. Nighttime temperatures will drop to the mid 40s.

Late Week Weather

A cold front will drop south through the region Wednesday morning, causing temperatures to fall throughout the day. By the early to mid afternoon, temperatures will be in the upper 30s and low 40s.

There will be additional scattered showers on Wednesday, but they will be hit or miss. A few wet snowflakes may even mix in. Most of the precipitation should end by the early afternoon and the day may end with some sunshine.

Clear skies and light north winds Wednesday night will send temperatures into the mid and upper 20s overnight for most areas. Any early sensitive vegetation will need to be protected from the cold.

Thursday will be sunny with some thin clouds passing through. Afternoon highs will recover from the chilly start for a high in the mid 50s.

Friday
should also be sunny and may be sans clouds whatsoever. Temperatures will moderate as winds swing around to the south with most areas into the low and mid 60s.

Warmer air will continue to push in this weekend with highs possibly breaking 70 by Sunday. Stray showers will be possible both Saturday and Sunday, but the best chance for steadier rain looks to be Saturday night.

Next week will turn more unsettled but will remain warm with highs in the 60s at a minimum and several chances for temperatures warmer than that.
