Shot of Cold
A cold front will cross the region this morning, turning winds to the northwest and north and ushering in colder air.
Temperatures will drop during the morning hours as the front arrives and will bottom out in the early and mid afternoon. Most areas will be a couple degrees on either side of 40 degrees during this time.
Some areas may sneak back into the mid 40s by the late afternoon as sunshine replaces the clouds from north to south. A few places in the Southern Tier may not see skies clear out until the sun is setting.
Accompanying the clouds throughout much of the day will be some occasional rain showers. Most of the time, it will probably not be raining, though. A few wet snowflakes may mix in at times as well.
Wind speeds will peak during the midday and first half of the afternoon with speeds just over 10 mph. A few gusts may just reach 30 mph.
The wind will drop substantially tonight with skies becoming fully clear. These are ideal conditions for cooling, and most areas should end up with temperatures well below freezing in the 20s. Early blossoms and cold sensitive vegetation will need to be protected.
Sunny skies will dominate throughout Thursday with few, if any, stray clouds and no chances for precipitation.
Winds will remain out of the north but will be light with speeds around 5 mph. Temperatures will warm steadily from the cold start, but highs will still only manage the upper 40s and low 50s.
The wind will turn to the southeast Thursday night, but this will only keep temperatures a few degrees warmer than Wednesday night. Many areas will be at or below 30 degrees, with mainly lake shores and the Syracuse area staying just above 30 degrees.
Please note that the National Weather Service is not yet issuing frost and freeze alerts for our area with the growing season not yet officially started.
Warmer Weather
Winds will become southerly on Friday but will remain light. It will be enough to boost temperatures into the low and even mid 60s thanks to another day of sun-filled skies.
South winds will increase to near 10 mph Friday Night and some thin clouds will work into the area during the predawn hours of Saturday. Temperatures will be much warmer as a result with nighttime lows in the low 40s.
Saturday itself will be a bit cooler than Friday, with mostly cloudy skies and some late afternoon showers. Look for highs in the upper 50s.
A warm front will move through Saturday night with showers and possibly a few thunderstorms. Overnight lows will be around 50 degrees.
A few showers and storms will continue to be possible on Sunday, with highs jumping into the mid 70s.
Monday will be warmer yet, with many areas making their first run at temperatures at or above 80 degrees. A few isolated showers and storms look possible but remain uncertain at this time.
Tuesday will probably see highs back into the 70s with a potential for showers and storms.
The second half of next week will probably see temperatures settle in the 60s with quiet conditions generally expected.
