Frontal Boundary

A frontal boundary is stalled across the Finger Lakes this morning and will wobble about the region today.

The biggest impact this front will have will be a wide variation in temperatures today.

Afternoon highs will range from the low 80s in the Southern Tier all the way to the upper 50s along the shore of Lake Ontario.

Most areas along and south of I-90 should at least see 70 degrees. Mid 70s are likely from about the southern tips of most of the Finger Lakes themselves and southward.

To the north of I-90, temperatures will quickly drop off with northward extent. This will be due to a combination of being on the cold side of the front, and the development of a lake breeze off Lake Ontario.

Winds will be light and variable, if not calm, throughout the day today.

Cloud cover will be variable in both time and space. Some areas of fog are present this morning but will burn off. After that, some periods will be sunny, others will be cloudy.

The majority of the region will remain dry today. There is, however, a small chance for a couple isolated showers or small thunderstorms during the latter half of the afternoon. These will be most likely across the southern half of the area.

Tonight, the front lifts north, as does the chance for a few showers or storms. Again, though, most areas will stay dry.

Nighttime temperatures will still have some variety, but not as huge of a range. Areas south of I-90 will remain in the upper 50s to near 60 degrees overnight. To the north, temperatures will drop off through the 50s with a few areas right along the Lake Ontario shore possibly reaching the upper 40s.

Temperatures will be a bit more uniform tomorrow with most areas in the mid to upper 70s. The broad valleys of the Southern Tier will make another run at the low 80s, while the immediate Lake Ontario shoreline areas see highs in the mid and upper 60s.

A cold front will sweep through from west to east during the midday and afternoon hours. Showers and thunderstorms will become numerous for a time. The further east, the greater the chances for thunderstorms. Severe weather is not expected.

Scattered showers will linger behind the front into the evening with a few remaining spits of drizzle overnight. Nighttime temperatures will reach a low mainly in the low 50s.

Late Week Weather

Mainly quiet weather is expected for the remainder of the work week with temperatures remaining warm.

Wednesday will be the coolest day of the work week overall, but highs will still mostly be in the upper 60s.

Early clouds should break up for some sunshine. Winds will continue to be very light, with a northerly whisper of wind at under 5 mph.

Sun and clouds will persist for Thursday as well with a slight uptick in wind speed from the west and northwest. Most areas will return to the 70s, with mid and upper 70s across the Southern Tier.

Clouds will increase on Friday, though some sunlight may still be able to filter through some thin spots in the overcast. Temperatures will increase as winds turn to the southeast. Look for highs mostly in the mid 70s with some warmer pockets.

There is a chance for some unsettled weather by the weekend, but the details are sketchy at best at this point. While both days will probably have a chance for rain, much of the rainfall will probably focus on one main time.

Temperatures will probably take a small hit with the unsettled weather, but highs in the upper 60s and low 70s are still likely.

As we head deeper into May, temperatures generally look as though they are going to stay warm.
