Hot May Weather
The Finger Lakes will get a taste of the summer months ahead during the first half of this week as temperatures push to levels yet unseen in 2024.
High pressure along the Mid-Atlantic coast and a strong low moving through the central US will work together to push increasingly hot and humid air toward our region.
At the surface, winds today will be barely perceptible with speeds under 5 mph. Wind direction will be variable based on topography.
Still, most areas should break into the 80s today with mid 80s likely in some of the typically warmer areas: around Syracuse, the Genesee Valley, and throughout the broad valleys of the Southern Tier.
Skies will be a mix of sun and clouds. There may be some periods where thin clouds filter the sunshine. A stray spit of rain cannot be totally ruled out, mainly across the western Southern Tier. Almost all areas will ultimately stay dry, though.
Partly to mostly cloudy skies are expected tonight, with a south wind picking up at around 5 mph. Overnight lows will be in the low and mid 60s for most areas as a result.
Tuesday will also have a mix of sun and clouds, but a slightly higher chance for some late day showers and storms as a system clips the region from the north. A small line of storms may pop up over the northern Finger Lakes during the mid afternoon, then drop south and dissipate.
Whether these storms will be able to actually develop is still questionable, as is how far southeast they will make it before falling apart.
Temperatures will add a few degrees, with most areas in the mid 80s while the same aforementioned warmer areas push into the upper 80s. Only a few higher elevations will stick to the low 80s. Dewpoints will creep toward the low 60s at times.
After starting out in the mid 60s, temperatures on Wednesday will be the high point of the week. Highs will be in the mid and upper 80s for most areas, but several locations will be at or even slightly above 90 degrees.
Dewpoints will continue to rise as well and will reside in the low and mid 60s throughout the day.
There will again be an increase in shower and storm potential during the afternoon, but activity is still expected to remain scattered at most.
Temperature Reset
A cold front will move toward the region Wednesday Night and should clear the area Thursday morning or midday.
Scattered showers and thunderstorms will be possible ahead of and along the front Wednesday Night and Thursday.
Temperatures will start out warm and muggy in the mid 60s Thursday morning, but afternoon highs will be limited to the mid 70s.
High pressure will build in and should provide pleasant weather for at least the first part of the Memorial Day Weekend.
Friday will have a mix of sun and clouds. A light northwest wind will bring fresh, less humid air into the region. Highs will mainly be in the low 70s.
Friday night will be refreshingly cool with most areas near or just under 50 degrees.
Saturday will follow suit with sun and clouds, light north winds, and highs in the low 70s.
The temperature will nudge upward slightly for Sunday with highs in the mid 70s. Dry conditions are likely to continue with sun and clouds.
By Monday, the forecast becomes much less certain, and rain and thunder may work back into the forecast.
As a whole, next week looks unsettled, though pinpointing which days will have the highest chances of rain at this point is impossible. Temperatures next week will remain locked into the 70s for highs with 50s at night.
