Unsettled Weather
A strong low pressure system is situated due north of the region over Canada and will slowly drift eastward over the next two days.
Winds feeding into this low are from the southwest this morning but will turn more towards the northwest as the day goes on. Winds will not be quite as blustery as yesterday, but speeds will be around 10 mph and gusts of 25-30 mph.
Cooler air will filter into the region on these winds, with afternoon highs not too much warmer than this morning’s lows. Most places will top out in the mid and upper 60s, with a few places such as Syracuse and Elmira around 70 degrees.
There are a few isolated spits of rain around the area this morning. Showers will increase early this afternoon and become numerous. On and off rain is likely throughout the afternoon and into the first half of the evening.
A couple of thundery downpours and maybe even some small hail will also be possible, though these will be in only a small percentage of the showers.
The showers will dissipate overnight, with lows dropping to the mid 50s.
Wednesday will be mostly cloudy, though some late sun may increase from north to south. The shower potential is uncertain as it shifts further south. The main question is whether some of the southern portions of the region see rain, or whether it all stays south over Pennsylvania.
Temperatures will be a degree or two cooler than today with more areas sticking to the mid 60s for highs. Winds will be out of the north with light speeds.
Dry Late Week
By Thursday, the low pressure will be exiting out over the northern Atlantic while a high pressure from Canada dives southeast and takes over.
Winds will increase on Thursday as the high moves in quicker than the low departs. North winds will blow with speeds up to 10 mph with gusts around 25 mph.
Temperatures on Thursday will start out in the mid and upper 40s with highs mainly in the mid 60s. Skies will be a mix of sun and clouds with no rain expected.
Clear skies Thursday night will lead to a chilly Friday morning. Low 40s will be common throughout the southern half of the region, with mid 40s along the lakes and to the north. I would not be surprised to see a few colder pockets at least flirt with the upper 30s, though I am not expecting any frost.
Friday will be sunny with just a few passing thin clouds. Winds will be from the northwest, again with speeds up to 10 mph.
Temperatures will start to nose upward, with highs in the upper 60s and low 70s.
Saturday should also stay dry, though the next weather system will be approaching. Sunshine filtering through thin clouds and a shift in the wind to the south will indicate the incoming system.
High temperatures on Saturday should reach the mid 70s.
Scattered showers will be possible on Sunday as that system rolls through. Temperatures will continue to rise, reaching the upper 70s.
Next week, highs will be at or above 80 degrees for much of the time. Rain chances will increase later in the week.
