Pattern Shift
High pressure will build into the area today, but will have a tough time eroding the overcast skies away.
Lower atmosphere moisture will get trapped beneath the incoming higher pressures, causing clouds to linger for much of the day.
A few spits of drizzle cannot be ruled out, but actual rain showers are not expected today.
The clouds should finally start to erode somewhat late in the afternoon and towards sunset. Skies tonight will be partly cloudy for a time before a batch of thin clouds moves in.
Winds will be light today with speeds near or under 5 mph. Wind direction will be from the north and northwest.
With the clouds and light northerly flow, temperatures will only be a few degrees warmer than yesterday. Most areas will be in the mid 60s with warmer pockets in the upper 60s.
Overnight temperatures will reach the upper 40s and low 50s for most, but some of the typically colder pockets will fall to the mid 40s.
Wednesday will have a mix of sun and clouds with no rain. There will be both thin clouds high in the atmosphere, and some scattered daytime heating induced clouds. These should both clear out late in the day with clear skies lingering through Wednesday night.
Winds will be light and variable on Wednesday, but the overall flow across the eastern United States will bring warmer air toward our region.
Combined with the increase in sunshine, and temperatures should see about a ten degree jump over today with highs in the mid 70s.
Southwest winds will take over on Thursday as the high pressure slides to our east. Temperatures will make another ten degrees jump with highs pushing into the mid 80s, taking us from chilly to warm very rapidly.
Thursday will also be dry with a mix of sun and clouds. The southwest winds will increase through the day, reaching 10 mph by the late afternoon.
Briefly Cooler, then Hot
A cold front will pass through the region on Friday, most likely during the morning hours.
Thunderstorms over the Upper Great Lakes late Thursday will drop southeast toward our region but should mostly or completely dissipate before reaching us Friday morning.
Additional showers and storms will fire along the front later Friday, but by that time, the front may have already cleared the region.
Most likely, there will be at least some rain in our area on Friday, especially in the morning. But there is a chance that we will miss out completely.
Unsurprisingly, winds will turn to the northwest behind the front and cooler air will briefly return to the area. Highs on Friday will be in the mid 70s, while Saturday, still under the influence of northwest winds, will top out in the low 70s.
Both Saturday and Sunday should be dry with partly cloudy skies. Sunday morning will be cool with temperatures similar to tonight in the 40s and low 50s. However, another shift will take place as winds turn to the south, and highs should approach 80 degrees.
Next week is highly likely to turn hot with multiple chances of hitting 90 degrees. Tuesday currently looks like the hottest of the days.
Precipitation will likely primarily be the result of pop-up showers and thunderstorms, either locally, or from areas upstream, which then sees the storms move into our region. Overall, the chances of rain are on the low side, but the day-to-day details are too uncertain.
Hot weather is slightly less likely later in the week, but the uncertainty is higher and it very well may remain quite warm.
