Dreary Weather
Low pressure over eastern New England will continue to spin in place while slowly dissipating over the next two days.
Northerly flow on the backside of the low will ensure our region stays cool, cloudy, and a bit showery.
Wind directions will go from nearly due north this morning to northwest by the afternoon. Wind speeds will be around 10 mph with gusts slightly above 25 mph.
This will bring us our coolest weather since mid-June, with highs today ranging from the upper 50s in higher elevations to mid 60s north of I-90 and in the broad valleys of the Southern Tier.
Skies will be mostly cloudy, though a few brief glimpses of sun will be possible this afternoon.
Drizzle and occasional showers will persist, though it may not be quite as dreary as yesterday.
Showers will likely increase tonight as temperatures drop quickly below 55 degrees and lake effect processes become more effective.
Overnight lows across the southern half of the region will be into the mid and upper 40s. To the north, low 50s are expected.
Showers will linger even into Wednesday as northwest winds around 10 mph persist. The showers should be more scattered tomorrow, with a gradual increase in the number of breaks of sunshine as the day goes on.
Temperatures will only be a touch warmer, with highs mainly in the low and mid 60s. A few upper 50s may hang on in the hills in and around Cortland County. Conversely, a few urban centers may make it into the upper 60s.
Sunny and Dry
By Thursday, high pressure should take over. Winds will still be from the northwest, but lighter, and bringing in dry air.
Sunshine will mix with fair weather clouds, but no rain is expected. After another cool morning in the 40s and low 50s, afternoon highs will start to rebound with all but the higher elevations getting back above 70 degrees.
Skies will be mostly clear Thursday night, but winds will turn to the southwest. This should limit overnight lows in the 40s to a few pockets across the Southern Tier and Central New York, while most of the area sees lows between 50-55 degrees.
The high will be nearly overhead on Friday. Fair weather clouds will again develop but may be a bit more limited than on Thursday. Winds will be light and variable with speeds generally under 5 mph.
Even higher elevations will be well into the 70s on Friday with most areas at least hitting 75 degrees. Upper 70s are likely in the broad valleys of the Southern Tier, and in and around Rochester and Syracuse.
Temperatures will continue to climb into the weekend, with highs around 80 degrees on Saturday and into the low and mid 80s on Sunday. Both days will be sunny and dry with fair weather clouds.
There may be a few showers around early next week, but the chances remain highly uncertain at this point.
Next week looks warm, if not hot, with highs sticking to the 80s. A few places hitting 90 degrees is not out of the question.
