High Pressure
While a weakening low pressure system remains meandering over New England, a strong high pressure system is building in from the west.
This high is centered over the Upper Great Lakes and Ohio River Valley and will dislodge our region from the control of the low.
Sunshine this morning will quickly give way to numerous fair weather clouds. There will still be breaks of sunshine throughout the day, and no rain is expected in the area.
With the positions of the low and the high, our winds will once again be from the northwest. Wind speeds will stay under 10 mph and peak gusts will be near or just over 20 mph.
Temperatures will start to come up, with most areas seeing low 70s this afternoon. Typically warmer areas, such as the I-90 corridor, Genesee Valley, and the broad valleys of the Southern Tier, will likely be in the mid 70s. Higher elevations, meanwhile, will stick to the upper 60s.
Clear skies are expected tonight with lows mainly between 50-55 degrees.
The high pressure will move overhead on Friday. Winds will be light and variable, and skies will be a mix of sun and clouds.
Temperatures will continue to rise with all but higher elevations between 75-80 degrees. Higher elevations will be in the low 70s.
With clear skies and a light south wind, Friday night’s temperatures will stick to the mid and upper 50s.
Weekend Weather and Beyond
High pressure will slide to the southeast on Saturday but will retain complete control of our weather.
Winds will turn to the southwest, but speeds will generally be at or under 5 mph. Sunshine will mix with fair weather clouds, as usual.
Afternoon highs will be a couple degrees on either side of 80 degrees, with low 80s in the usual warm spots and upper 70s in the hills.
On Sunday and Monday, there will be a small break in the pressure fields between the high pressure system now weakening over the Atlantic and a new high pressure system from Canada.
This may open a small window for a few stray showers, mainly during the afternoon hours, on Sunday and Monday.
Most areas will likely get through both days without rain, but the chance for stray showers remains.
Temperatures will rise a couple more degrees, with most areas getting above 80 degrees on Sunday. The temperature will then flatten out, with low 80s persisting on Monday and Tuesday.
More dry weather is expected for the middle of next week, but rain chances will increase later in the week.
Temperatures late in the week are less certain with a wider range showing on the models. Highs should be somewhere in the 80s, though, with a small chance for a few places to hit 90 degrees at some point.
As we head into early September, temperatures will retreat slightly with highs in the 70s more likely than the 80s. Some of this may be the result of increased rain chances.
