Frontal Boundary
A cold front is moving south through the Finger Lakes this morning.
Clouds associated with the front are in place and will stick around for much of the day. However, rain will be harder to come by and should be limited to a stray shower here or there.
As the front heads south, winds will turn to the north and northwest at speeds of 5-10 mph. Cooler and eventually less humid air will work in through the afternoon.
Temperatures, which are starting out the day near or above 70 degrees, will only rise a few more degrees before the cooler air takes over. For much of the northern half of the region, this will yield highs in the mid to perhaps upper 70s.
Further south, in the counties bordering Pennsylvania, temperatures will have more time to rise before the front clears the region. These areas will probably break into the 80s for a couple of hours.
Dewpoints will slowly drop during the afternoon, transitioning from muggy values near 70 to the upper 50s by the evening.
The front will make it into Pennsylvania, where it will then stall out and fizzle away over the next couple of days.
Humid air may seep back northward Thursday afternoon as a result. After starting with a mix of sun and clouds, some late day showers will be possible over the southern half of the region.
Temperatures will still be on the cooler side Thursday, with morning lows in the upper 50s and afternoon highs in the mid 70s.
Labor Day Weekend Weather
The weather on Friday is a bit less certain, but at least a few showers will be possible. While these may end up more isolated, they could be slow-moving downpours, leading to locally heavy rain amounts. How this unfolds should become more clear over the next 24-48 hours.
Temperatures and dewpoints will creep upward. Friday morning’s lows will be in the low 60s while afternoon highs will reach the upper 70s. Dewpoints will rise into the mid 60s.
By Saturday, a new weather system will make its way through the region. Rain and thunderstorms look likely, especially during the morning and early afternoon hours. There is still a chance for some dry weather late in the day, but time will tell if this trend holds true.
Dewpoints will be back around 70 degrees on Saturday, with afternoon highs in the upper 70s.
South winds both Friday and Saturday will be blustery with speeds of 10-15 mph and gusts around 25 mph. Winds will lessen later Saturday afternoon.
Sunday will likely be the pick day for outdoor activities this holiday weekend. No rain is expected with highs near 80 degrees. Dewpoints, however, will be comfortably lower in the 50s.
Another front will move through Sunday night with some rain showers. A few of these may linger into Monday.
Blustery northwest winds will set up on Monday, bringing in some chilly air. With plenty of clouds staying in place, highs will struggle to reach the mid 60s.
Clearing skies and calm winds Monday night will drop temperatures well into the 40s. Tuesday looks dry and sunny with highs remaining in the 60s.
The rest of next week looks dry and sunny with highs returning to the 70s.
