Late Week Weather Forecast
High pressure is now centered off the coast of New England but will continue to be the main influence in our weather today.
A light southerly flow of air on the backside of the high will keep temperatures milder than recent days. Wind speeds will be around or slightly above 5 mph.
Most areas started the day in the 50s and will see highs well into the 70s. A few low 80s will likely show up near Syracuse, Rochester, and into the Genesee Valley.
Even higher elevations should be at least near 75 degrees today. Dewpoints will remain low in the 40s and 50s.
Skies will be sunny and bright with almost no clouds whatsoever.
Clear skies will persist into the nighttime hours, as will the southerly wind.
Overnight lows will mainly be in the mid and upper 50s with a few pockets of low 50s through the Southern Tier and especially around Cortland County.
Thin, high atmosphere clouds will begin to move in Friday morning and will continue to increase during the afternoon. At least some filtered sunshine should still make it through the clouds. No rain will fall.
Southerly winds will increase to 5-10 mph, ensuring temperatures stay warm. Afternoon highs will generally be a couple of degrees warmer than today.
Friday evening will stay dry, but a few showers could begin to work in after midnight Friday night. Southerly winds will remain, keeping overnight temperatures in the 55-60 degree range.
Weekend Weather Forecast
Low pressure will develop near Lake Erie Friday Night and lift north-northeast into Canada on Saturday. Further eastward progress will be blocked in part by the same high pressure system that has dominated our weather this week.
A cold front will slowly move east across the region Saturday with a band of rain. Expect the rain to start from west to east during the morning hours.
This slow-moving area of precipitation will take several hours to pass, though there may be some breaks within the overall rainy area.
Rain amounts look to be between a half and one inch. A few rumbles of thunder are possible, but true thunderstorms are unlikely.
Winds will be on the blustery side from the south ahead of the front, but will turn to the west and northwest with lighter speeds behind the front.
As long as the rain starts during the morning hours, temperatures are unlikely to escape the 60s.
The day may end with a little sunshine and skies will become partly cloudy to mostly clear at times Saturday night. Clouds and a few showers will be more likely along the shore of Lake Ontario.
Temperatures by Sunday morning will range through the 40s with most areas at least near, if not below 45 degrees.
Sunday will continue to carry the chance for a few stray showers, but there will likely be more sunny breaks than rainfall. It will remain cool with highs in the 60s.
Another dominating high pressure system is expected next week, bringing more sunny, dry weather to the area.
Temperatures will moderate again as well, with a steady increase through the 70s during the first half of the week. During the second half of the week, temperatures should level off in the upper 70s with a few low 80s.
