High pressure takes over the weather

High Pressure Dominates

A large area of high pressure will build into the region today and begin a long reign of warm, dry weather.

Low clouds in the wake of last night’s rain and thunderstorms linger this morning. As the sun rises and high pressure builds in, these clouds should erode away.

By the late morning and midday hours, skies will become partly cloudy to mostly sunny. The afternoon should only have a few stray clouds here and there.

Light northwest winds will blow through the day with speeds just over 5 mph. Temperatures will average out around 70 degrees.

It will be on the cool side tonight with clear skies and calm winds. Low 50s are expected across the north, with upper 40s and a few mid 40s across the south. The coolest air will be found in and around Cortland County.

Wednesday will be sunny with just a few thin clouds passing through. Winds will be nearly calm at the surface but light from the south aloft.

This will help temperatures warm quickly during the day with highs mainly in the 75-80 degree range. A few low 80s will be possible in the broad valleys of the Southern Tier.

From there, the weather will be stuck on repeat for a while.

Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday all have nearly identical forecasts with morning lows in the mid and upper 50s and afternoon highs just above 80 degrees.

Sunshine will be abundant with just a few fair weather clouds, and winds will be light and variable, if not completely calm.

Dry, warm weather is likely to persist well into next week as well, though the range of possible temperatures will increase somewhat.

Rain chances may increase towards the end of next week but remain too uncertain to count on.

One final note is soon-to-be Hurricane Francine in the western Gulf of Mexico. Francine will likely make landfall in Louisiana tomorrow afternoon, then slowly make its way up the Mississippi River valley.

Our high pressure system will block its northward progression, and Francine is expected to dissipate near St. Louis, Missouri, by the weekend.

No rain will make it even close to our region.
