High Pressure

A stripe of unsettled weather runs up and down the eastern United States, but high pressure will build into our area this afternoon from the west.

The transition from lower pressures to high pressure will act a bit like a front this morning as dry, more stable air moves in. Before this can happen, though, scattered showers will continue off and on through the morning hours.

Gradually, the rain showers will move east and some breaks in the clouds will start to develop. Southeastern areas will hold on to the clouds and showers longest, while northwestern areas will see sunny breaks first. Some parts of the Southern Tier may never see the breaks of sunshine.

All but a few higher elevations should at least see 70 degrees today, and some urban and broad valley locations will make a run at 75 degrees.

Winds will be light, turning to the northwest as the high pressure takes over.

The high pressure system will block moisture associated with Hurricane Helene from immediately moving north. However, clouds out ahead of Helene will move back in over the area tonight.

For most of the area, these will be somewhat thin clouds high in the atmosphere which will persist throughout Friday. Varying amounts of filtered sunshine will be possible through these clouds.

Closer to the NY-PA state line, the clouds will be a bit thicker and filtered sunshine less likely.

No rain is expected in the area on Friday.

Highs will again be in the low and mid 70s throughout the area.

Weekend Weather

As high pressure slides eastward, moisture associated with the remains of Helene will try to seep into the area.

A few scattered showers are expected on Saturday, mainly across the southern half of the region. There should be an uptick in cloudiness, too.

Temperatures may take a small hit due to the increased cloud cover and scattered showers, with highs mainly in the low 70s on Saturday.

Sunday, too, may have a few stray showers, but the chances as a whole are rather low. It will remain cloudy though, possibly with some filtered sunshine at times.

Morning temperatures will be mild, starting out around 60 degrees. Afternoon highs will be around 70.

Some scattered showers are possible on Monday, but how exactly they evolve and what time or times they are most likely is still uncertain. Generally speaking, though, it looks like the later in the day, the higher the chances for rain.

Rain is even more likely on Tuesday, though again, the fine details of how the day turns out are uncertain this far in advance.

Temperatures both Monday and Tuesday should remain in the same general range near or slightly above 70 degrees.

Cooler air is likely to move in behind Tuesday’s weather system, though. High temperatures will dip to the low 60s on Wednesday and will likely remain in the 60s for the foreseeable future thereafter.

There is not much consensus among the models about rainfall after morning showers end Wednesday, though there will probably be some rain sometimes late next week or the following weekend.
