Late Week Weather
Despite a cold front moving through the area yesterday, warm air will make a quick return to the area for the end of the week.
Areas of fog are in place this morning, mainly in the broad river valleys and especially along Keuka, Seneca, and Cayuga lakes.
As the fog burns off, skies will be mostly sunny. Temperatures will rise steadily from morning lows ranging through the 40s.
Thin clouds will move in by midday and may filter some of the sunshine as they increase and thicken this afternoon. No rain will fall, though.
Light south winds will help push temperatures upward with most areas above or at least close to 70 degrees this afternoon.
Clouds and south winds will keep temperatures up tonight with lows mainly in the upper 40s and low 50s.
Friday will also have a mix of sun and clouds with south winds. Highs will end up a couple of degrees warmer than today, with most areas in the vicinity of the mid 70s.
Late in the day, scattered showers will move in from the west. There is some question as to how widespread these will become as they continue into the evening hours.
Even if the showers become more widespread, they will remain light and should move out by or shortly after midnight.
Cool Weather Looms
Friday night’s showers will be along another cold front. By Saturday morning, winds will be northerly, though skies should already be mostly clear.
Saturday will have abundant sunshine with seasonable temperatures in the mid 60s. Wind speeds will be just above 5 mph.
Winds will go calm for a time Saturday night before turning to the southeast. Clear skies will also have some clouds take over during the overnight. These two factors should put a limit on how cold it will get.
By Sunday morning, even with those factors at play, low and mid 40s should be widespread throughout the region. A few colder, potentially frosty pockets cannot be ruled out, especially in and around Cortland County.
And yet, the increasingly blustery south wind will push afternoon highs on Sunday all the way back into the low 70s.
Sunday will have a mix of sun and clouds with late afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms. Severe thunderstorms are not expected.
The cold front responsible for these storms will move through Sunday night, leading to by far the chilliest week of the season so far next week.
Highs on Monday should manage to get above 60 for most areas, but the middle of next week will be stuck in the 50s for highs. Temperatures should nudge their way back into the low 60s by week’s end.
There will be frequent showers next week, but also some periods of clearer weather. It remains uncertain whether any clear periods will line up with a full overnight, but the potential for at least patchy frost is real next week.
