Warm Front
A broad push of warm air is surging north through the Great Lakes and Ohio Valley with its sights set on our region next.
Along the leading edge of this warm surge is an area of rain showers. These showers will make their way into the Finger Lakes during the afternoon hours today.
The rain will focus especially on the northern half of the region, where all areas should see a period of showers. Across the south, the rain may be more hit or miss, with lower chances the further south one goes.
The rain will not last long and amounts will be light, with most areas seeing under a quarter of an inch. The most likely time for rain will be between 2-5 PM.
Southeast winds are out ahead of the front, and with the passage of the front, the wind will turn slightly more towards due south. Wind speeds will be around 10 mph today with gusts of 25-30 mph. The strongest gusts will be over higher elevations.
Temperatures today will be warmer than yesterday, despite plenty of clouds and the afternoon showers. Look for afternoon highs will be between 60-65 degrees for most areas, though higher elevations will stick to the upper 50s.
Breezy south winds will continue tonight with mixed skies. Warm air will continue to push into the region, holding nighttime temperatures in the low and mid 50s for most areas. Upper 40s will be possible across portions of the Southern Tier and into Cortland County and surrounding areas.
Wednesday will be a warm day with highs pushing well into the mid and even upper 70s. Gusty south winds will continue, turning slightly to the southwest as the day goes on.
Sunshine will be filtered by an area of clouds high in the atmosphere. How much sun is able to make it through remains to be seen. No rain will fall, though.
Wednesday night will again be blustery and warm, with overnight lows ranging from near 50 to near 60 degrees.
Thursday will be more of the same with southwest winds persisting, skies a mix of sun and clouds, and temperatures shooting far above 70 degrees.
The weather looks pretty good for tick-or-treating Thursday evening as well, with warm temperatures and rain likely holding off until well after the festivities are over. The rain that does end up falling Thursday night looks even less impressive than what is coming through this afternoon.
Temperatures Fluctuate
The rain Thursday night will be caused by a cold front. What it lacks for in terms of precipitation it will make up for in its effect on our temperatures.
Winds will swing around to the northwest overnight, remaining as blustery and gusty as before.
Temperatures will take a long slide, reaching the mid 50s by Friday morning and continuing to slowly drop through the day. By the late afternoon, many areas will be into the 40s.
The temperature will not stop there, dropping down into the low and mid 30s by Saturday morning. Afternoon highs on Saturday will be around 50 degrees.
Friday looks dry, though a morning lingering shower cannot be totally ruled out. Clouds will likely stick around much of the day, but sunshine should be more available on Saturday.
Saturday night will be colder still with many areas in the low 30s but with colder pockets in the 20s.
Things will start to turn around a bit on Sunday with highs making their way back to the mid 50s. Monday will see the return of some 60s.
The weather as a whole is fairly uncertain next week, and there will be chances for rain. How the rain and the weather systems spawning it evolves will influence how warm temperatures get next week. The warmest weather looks to be around Tuesday and Wednesday before cooler weather settles in again.
