Early Week Warm Up
A cold high pressure system has temperatures starting the week on a cold note.
As the high slides east today, warmer air will start to move in behind as southerly winds take hold.
Skies will remain sunny this morning, but as the high moves further away, clouds will build in this afternoon. There may even be a brief snow shower for some northern areas late this afternoon.
Temperatures will range from the low 30s around Rochester and the Genesee Valley to the mid 20s for most areas east of Cayuga Lake and south of Syracuse.
The south wind will build to 10 mph this afternoon and as high as 15 mph this evening.
Toward midnight, a burst of snow will enter the region from the northwest. This snow will take several hours to move through, leaving behind accumulations of 1-3 inches.
Temperatures will drop to the mid 20s ahead of the snow but rise as it moves through. The northwestern half of the region should be into the low 30s by sunrise, while the southeastern half remains in the mid and upper 20s.
While the main band of snow will be east of the area by sunrise, there will be areas of snow showers behind it. These will continue off and on through the morning with just a few lingering flurries in the afternoon.
Winds will swing around to the northwest Tuesday afternoon, holding highs to the mid 30s despite the early warming.
Late Week Weather
Christmas Day on Wednesday will be quiet, yet cloudy. No snow is expected. There is a small chance for a few glimpses of sun late in the afternoon.
Winds will be nearly calm with highs averaging around 30 degrees. Morning temperatures will be in the mid 20s.
Thursday will have morning clouds and maybe a stray flurry. Temperatures will start in the low 20s. The afternoon should have some sun with highs in the low 30s.
Quiet weather will stretch into Friday with a mix of sun and clouds. The morning will be chilly with lows in the 10s, but the afternoon will rise to the mid 30s.
More substantial warming will build in for the weekend, with highs near 40 degrees on Saturday and into the mid 40s on Sunday.
Saturday looks cloudy but dry, while Sunday looks rainy. There may also be a period of wind Saturday night or early Sunday.
Showery, mild weather will persist through the end of the year before temperatures retreat slightly for the start of 2025.
