Early Week Weather

Low pressure to our northwest will keep our weather warm, windy, and unsettled today.

This strong low has pushed a cold front through the region during the overnight hours. While the incoming air mass isn’t as warm as it was yesterday, it is still mild by late December standards.

Temperatures will mainly hold in the mid 40s for most of the daytime hours today. Some western areas are starting in the low 40s and even upper 30s, but should add a couple of degrees today.

Blustery southwest winds will be with us throughout the daytime hours as well. Wind gusts will be in the 30-40 mph range.

Skies are partly cloudy to start the day, but clouds will increase before too long.

A period of scattered showers is likely from the late morning into the early, possibly mid afternoon. The rain will be on and off, and some areas, particularly in the Southern Tier, may not see much rain at all.

Winds will weaken tonight and precipitation will be hard to come by. The clouds may even break up somewhat with partly cloudy skies possible early Tuesday. Overnight lows will be in the mid 30s.

Temperatures will rise to the mid 40s again on Tuesday as a new weather system moves toward the area. A few rain showers may make it into the region by sunset, with a better chance for rain during the evening hours. The rain may be widespread and steady for a couple hours, but should mainly be out of the area by the time the new year rings in at midnight.

Another cold front will push through early Wednesday morning, resulting in temperatures dropping from the upper 30s to the mid and low 30s during the daytime.

Rain showers will be possible early Wednesday, but these will turn over to snow during the day.

There is a small chance for some snow accumulation on Wednesday.

Cold and Snowy

Lake effect snow will develop immediately behind this weather system Wednesday night into Thursday.

Winds will be from the west-northwest, meaning the northeastern corner of the region will be favored for meaningful snow. Wayne, northern Cayuga, and Onondaga counties may see several inches just by Thursday morning.

Thursday will continue to be snowy for those same areas, including the Syracuse metro area. Eventually, the snow band should lift a bit further north and it may be mainly out of the area on Friday.

Outside of this lake effect, there will be a few stray flurries, but nothing major to worry about. Temperatures will drop, with highs near 30 on Thursday and in the upper 20s on Friday.

We will also have another period of blustery winds, starting Wednesday night and continuing through Thursday.

Peak wind gusts should be around 40 mph with northwest winds Wednesday night gradually shifting to a more westerly direction on Thursday.

Winds will lessen only slightly on Friday with a few gusts at or above 30 mph.

As we get into next weekend, cold air will continue to deepen. Highs Saturday and Sunday will be in the mid 20s with overnight lows dipping into the 10s.

There will continue to be lake effect snow in the region, but it is uncertain how far south this will come into the Finger Lakes.

Temperatures will stay in the mid 20s early next week with a chance for some more widespread snow. It will only get colder from there, with highs struggling to even reach 20 degrees by the middle of next week and failing to do so by the end of the week.

Areas of lake effect snow will likely persist as well, making for a cold and snowy first couple weeks of 2025.
