Changing Weather
An area of low pressure over the Ohio River Valley this morning will impact our New Year’s Eve with some rain showers.
Out ahead of this low, some sun is shining this morning. Clouds will gradually increase throughout the morning and early afternoon as the low draws closer.
The majority of the region should remain dry through sunset, with showers arriving during the early evening. These showers should be scattered and will mostly come to an end during the late evening hours.
Temperatures this afternoon will rise into the mid 40s with light but increasing southeast winds.
Evening temperatures will be slow to drop and should remain near or above 40 degrees for most areas through Midnight.
Around and shortly after Midnight, rain will increase again throughout the region. Another lull in the precipitation is likely Wednesday morning as the center of low pressure crosses over the area.
As the low pushes into northern New York, northwest winds will take over and increase. Afternoon and evening gusts will be as high as 40 mph.
Temperatures will drop from the upper 30s in the morning to the mid 30s in the afternoon. Rain showers will turn over to snow, which may fall steadily at times through the afternoon.
However, with temperatures generally remaining above freezing, accumulations should be minimal and mainly on grassy surfaces.
Widespread snow will consolidate into lake effect bands Wednesday night. Off Lake Erie, some snow will impact Wyoming and Allegany counties. Off Lake Ontario, Wayne, northern Cayuga, Onondaga, and northern Cortland counties will see snow.
Over the course of Thursday, winds will become a bit more westerly while remaining blustery. This should pivot the Lake Ontario band slightly to the north, likely impacting Syracuse directly. The rest of the region will see scattered flurries.
Temperatures will start Thursday in the upper 20s with highs in the low 30s.
Deep Winter Cold
Temperatures will continue to drop late in the week. Friday will start in the mid 20s with highs near 30 degrees. Saturday will start near 20 with highs in the mid 20s.
For Sunday and Monday, temperatures will stabilize a bit with highs staying in the mid 20s. Nighttime temperatures will slip into the upper 10s.
Areas of lake effect snow will persist through Sunday. The snow will likely bounce around the region, sometimes coming further south, other times staying north.
Significant accumulations are likely across the northeastern corner of the region, including Syracuse. It is not out of the question that some areas could see two feet or more through the weekend. Most of the region of the region, however, will see a general 1-4 inches.
The lake effect will be disrupted on Monday as an area of low pressure passes to our south. While worth keeping an eye on, so far, the models have been fairly consistent in keeping most of this to our south.
Behind this low, however, cold air will be reinforced. By the middle of next week, daytime highs will struggle to reach 20 degrees. This cold will remain locked in place throughout next week and into the following week.
Additional lake effect snow is likely to be a daily occurrence as well, though location will be dictated by the wind direction.
Have a happy and safe New Year’s Eve! My next post will likely be Thursday morning.
