Weekend Weather Forecast
An area of high pressure has built in overhead, bringing our region a brief break in the active weather.
In particular, winds will be light and from the south today. Not only will this provide relief from the constant gusty winds, it also provides zero opportunities for lake effect snow today.
In fact, much of the region has clear skies to start the morning. There are a few stray patches of clouds as well, and thin clouds are beginning to stream into the area out ahead of a pair of weather systems to our northwest and southwest.
Clouds will gradually increase and thicken today, reducing the availability of sunshine. No precipitation will fall during the daytime or early evening hours today.
Afternoon highs will be in the mid and upper 20s. A few higher elevations will stick to the low 20s. Evening temperatures will mostly remain in the low 20s with winds remaining light or even completely calm.
Widespread light snow will start to move in from the west during the latter half of the evening hours and should overspread much of the area by midnight or shortly thereafter. This snow will continue into Saturday morning.
An inch or two of accumulation can be expected overnight with locally another inch Saturday morning. Most areas will end up with an inch or two total, but a few areas could see as much as three inches.
As the widespread snow tapers off early Saturday afternoon, northwesterly flow will lead to some areas of lake effect snow that will continue through Saturday night.
This lake effect should mainly impact Wayne, Seneca, Cayuga, and Tompkins counties. Cayuga Lake may be able to enhance the snowfall some immediately south-southeast of the lake. Locally, a couple more inches may fall.
Most of this snow should be weakened and heading north, out of the area, but early Sunday morning as winds turn more southerly again.
Like today, there may be some early sun Sunday, but clouds will increase and thicken.
High temperatures Saturday will be in the upper 20s and low 30s while most areas should be at or above 30 degrees on Sunday.
Next Weeks’ Weather
Southerly flow will continue into Monday, leading many areas to reach or climb above freezing for a couple hours.
Late in the day, a cold front will move through, bringing some scattered snow showers.
West winds will set up behind this front, leading to some Lake Erie snow across the southern half of the region. This snow will be in place later Monday night through Tuesday morning.
Temperatures will drop to the mid 10s by Tuesday morning, and highs Tuesday will only be near 20 degrees.
Winds will turn more northwesterly later Tuesday into Wednesday, sending snow from Lake Ontario back into the region. The wind speed will increase, too, and Wednesday may end up looking a lot like several of our past days.
Lake effect will dissipate late Wednesday as a weather system moves into the area with some widespread light snow on Thursday.
Temperatures should rise again late next week and next weekend with another good chance of climbing above freezing.
However, more cold awaits the following week, which will probably mean at least a chance for more lake effect snow.
