Early Week Weather
The week is off to a sunny start today with clear skies throughout the Finger Lakes.
However, a weather system over Canada is poised to bring rapid changes to the weather overnight in what will be just the first of several swings in the weather this week.
Winds will increase from the southwest out ahead of this system this afternoon. The strongest winds will be over Western New York, but gusts to 50 mph will be possible in the Genesee Valley and Rochester areas.
As far east as Seneca Lake, gusts may exceed 40 mph and Wind Advisories from the National Weather Service are in effect. To the east of Seneca Lake, a few gusts may still approach 40 mph, particularly in the hills of Cayuga, Onondaga, and Cortland counties.
Temperatures today will peak in the low and mid 30s. Clouds will begin to move in late this afternoon from northwest to southeast.
No snow is expected until the late evening and overnight hours. It will remain windy, with temperatures holding in the 25-30 degree range much of the night.
A strong snow squall will move south through the area along a sharp cold front during the predawn and very early morning hours of Tuesday. Near-zero visibility and a rapid inch or so of snow is likely. This squall may still be in the Southern Tier area as the sun rises tomorrow morning.
Temperatures will quickly fall with the frontal passage, reaching the low 20s by dawn and falling into the upper 10s for the afternoon. A few areas may sneak back to 20 degrees Tuesday afternoon with mainly quiet conditions and a few breaks of sun.
Another area of snow along a warm front will move in Tuesday evening and continue off and on through the overnight. Accumulations of an inch or two are expected. Temperatures will rise steadily through the night, reaching the low 30s by Wednesday morning.
More Rapid Fluctuations
Temperatures and winds will increase on Wednesday with highs mainly in the mid 30s.
On and off snow will persist with some heavier squalls possible from time to time and especially in the afternoon.
These squalls will be accompanied by another cold front that will once again send temperatures into a free fall. By Thursday morning, temperatures will be in the single digits and lower half of the teens.
Snow will consolidate into some lake effect bands on northwest winds Wednesday night but should mostly dissipate by Thursday morning as winds turn back to the south again.
Temperatures will rebound from the cold start to push back toward 30 degrees on Thursday. Like today, expect a good deal of sunshine and a few clouds.
The next system will move in from the south on Friday. Right now, it is not clear if mostly rain or snow will fall. Temperatures have a shot at reaching the upper 30s, though.
Yet again, temperatures will almost immediately swing the other way with lows in the upper 10s Friday night and highs Saturday barely above 20 degrees. It should be another sunny, dry day, though.
It should be no surprise, then, that Sunday will bounce back into the 30s. Like Friday, rain, snow, or both will be possible, but it is too uncertain at this time to tell which.
Temperatures should take a slower slide for the first part of next week, followed by a slower rise by the following weekend.
