Weekend Weather Forecast
An area of low pressure will pass to our south this afternoon and evening.
Out ahead of this system, a light southerly flow has pushed most areas into the mid and upper 30s overnight. Just a few cold pockets in the eastern Finger Lakes remain below freezing early this morning.
There is also some scattered precipitation around this morning. Most of this is falling as rain, but some pockets of freezing rain or snow will be possible where it is colder.
On and off light bits of precipitation will gradually increase toward midday and transition into steady rain during the afternoon.
Winds will remain light throughout the day and will even go calm for an hour or two before picking back up from the north. Highs will be in the upper 30s to near 40 degrees but will start to drop late.
Rain will turn over to snow around and shortly after sunset from north to south. Several hours of steady snow are likely this evening before it ends. Most areas will see an inch or two, but a few places could push three inches.
Cold air will quickly build in tonight with lows in the upper 10s. Only, these won’t be true lows, with temperatures slipping a few more degrees during the day on Saturday. Most areas will be in the mid 10s most of Saturday.
North and northwest winds will increase after midnight tonight and continue through Saturday morning. Wind speeds will be 10-15 mph with gusts slightly over 25 mph.
A few stray flurries will be possible early Saturday. Otherwise, it should be a quiet, albeit cloudy, day.
Some partial clearing will be possible Saturday evening as winds turn easterly, but a new area of clouds will be quick to move in. Still, overnight lows will drop to the low 10s and upper 0s. Parts of Cortland County may slip all the way toward 0 degrees.
Sunday’s winds will start from the southeast and will become southerly, increasing as they do so. Gusts of 30-40 mph are expected, especially over higher elevations. Temperatures will reach the low 30s during the day as a result.
Sunday afternoon will see some light snow showers. Most areas will see less than an inch of accumulation.
Milder Weather Next Week
While we never managed to get a January thaw, temperatures will be warmer than they have been for quite some time during the first week of February.
Southerly winds will continue to warm temperatures Sunday night. By Monday morning, most areas will be into the mid and upper 30s.
Monday itself should see highs in the mid 40s. Skies will be cloudy, and a spit of rain cannot be ruled out; Nor can a few snow showers in the evening.
Winds will be back to the northwest by Tuesday morning, but the air will not get too cold. Morning lows will be in the mid 20s with highs around 30 degrees Tuesday afternoon.
Skies will be mostly cloudy, but there may be a glimpse of sun here or there.
Tuesday night will again be in the mid 20s while Wednesday warms to the mid 30s. Clouds will be plentiful again as the next weather system approaches, but no precipitation is expected.
Thursday will be the warmest day of the week, with temperatures having a good shot at pushing 50 degrees. There is a small chance it could get even warmer.
It will be a windy, rain day on Thursday as low pressure passes to our west, then north.
Temperatures will fall through Friday with highs stabilizing in the upper 20s and low 30s through next weekend and into the following week.
