High Pressure

The weather will be tranquil across the Finger Lakes for the next couple of days as high pressure passes through.

For the most part, skies will remain rather cloudy. However, there will be some glimpses of sun here and there today.

There are a few lake effect snow showers this morning, mainly across portions of the northern Finger Lakes. Winds will turn more westerly by midday, removing most of these from the area.

The wind will be a touch blustery across the northern half of the region with speeds slightly over 10 mph and gusts to 25 mph. Lighter winds are expected to the south, with speeds decreasing everywhere by the evening.

Temperatures today will mainly be in the mid 20s with overnight lows ranging through the 10s.

Tomorrow will also be mostly cloudy. The best chance for some glimpses of sun will be in the morning. Later in the day, clouds associated with a low pressure system to the south will thicken, especially in the southern half of the region.

Snow from this system is expected to stay well to our south, but as the system passes by, a few lake effect flurries will be possible Tuesday night.

Winds will stay light through Tuesday and Tuesday night, starting the day with a southerly flow and ending with a northerly one.

Temperatures will top out in the upper 20s and low 30s on Tuesday. Nighttime temperatures will again drop well into the 10s.

Little change is expected for the daytime hours Wednesday with cloudy skies and highs again near 30 degrees. Winds will turn easterly, then southeasterly, picking up speed in the evening.

Two Weather Systems

The change in wind late Wednesday will be in response to our next weather maker moving in.

A mixed bag of changing precipitation types is likely, but the overall amounts at this point look low.

Snow showers will start things off Wednesday evening, gradually mixing with some sleet overnight as temperatures rise toward the low 30s. By Thursday morning, spits of regular rain are expected.

Temperatures will peak around 40 degrees in the middle of the day Thursday with a few spits of rain still possible.

South winds will become strong Wednesday night, especially over the Bristol Hills and the hills between Syracuse and Cortland. Additional gusty winds, though not as strong, will develop late Thursday as winds turn to the west and temperatures start to slip.

Friday will start out in the 10s again with highs in the mid 20s. Scattered lake effect snow showers will be possible.

Another weather system will come at us later Saturday into Sunday. It remains too early to tell what this system will bring, though as a whole, it looks more potent than Thursday’s as far as precipitation amounts.

Cool weather will build in next week behind this system with highs sticking to the 20s or even 10s.
