Late Week Weather
Light snow will fall off and on over the next few days as lake effect and a small weather system impact the area.
Scattered lake effect flurries exist across portions of the northern and eastern Finger Lakes this morning. Locally, an inch or so of fluff may fall, but most areas will see little to no accumulation.
The lake effect will gradually weaken and lift north during the midday hours, but will neither completely dissipate nor totally move north out of the area. For the afternoon, flurries will be most likely north of the Thruway.
Skies as a whole will remain cloudy, though some breaks of sun will be possible here and there across the southern half of the region.
Temperatures today will top out around 20 degrees, though some higher elevations may stick to the mid 20s. Winds will be much lighter, with most areas seeing top gusts near or just over 20 mph.
Lake effect snow will move back south this evening before dissipating during the overnight. The snow will only make it about halfway down Cayuga and Seneca Lake. Again, locally an inch or so of fluff will be possible.
Many areas will slip into the single digits overnight with the coldest pockets ending up near or below 5 degrees.
After some stray morning flurries Thursday, widespread light snow will move in for the afternoon hours. The snow will continue into the evening, with a general 1-3 inches falling by midnight.
The widespread snow will transition to lake effect overnight, with a spray of snow for most areas outside of the Southern Tier. Some enhancement off Cayuga Lake will be possible in the Ithaca area into early Friday morning.
High temperatures Thursday will end up around 20 degrees with overnight lows in the mid 10s. Winds will be from the northwest and a bit stronger than today, with a few gusts approaching 30 mph, mainly late in the day and into the nighttime hours.
After sunrise, the snow will become lighter and mainly contained to areas east of Cayuga Lake. The snow should gradually diminish, with Cayuga and Onondaga counties seeing the snow longest, possibly into early Friday evening.
Most areas that see this lake effect snow will pick up an inch or two, but locally three or four inches cannot be ruled out.
Friday will see highs in the low 20s. Northwest winds will continue to blow with a few gusts near 30 mph.

Slight Easing Up
High pressure will move through the area this weekend, bringing a couple of quiet days.
Saturday will start with lows in the lower half of the teens and a few pockets of single digits.
Skies should become partly cloudy to mostly clear during the morning and remain as such into the afternoon.
Winds will be light from the southwest with top gusts around 20 mph. The southwesterly flow will boost temperatures to the upper 20s and low 30s.
Sunday will be a bit cloudier, though some sun cannot be ruled out. A few stray snow showers cannot be totally ruled out, either, but most areas should remain dry throughout the day.
Temperatures will add a couple more degrees, with morning lows in the mid and upper 10s and afternoon highs in the low 30s.
Early next week looks a bit warmer yet with highs Monday and Tuesday in the upper 30s to near 40 degrees. Both days will have a chance for some scattered rain and snow showers, but no significant precipitation is expected.
Southerly winds early Monday may be a bit blustery, especially over higher elevations. Lighter winds are expected for the afternoon, while Tuesday’s winds will be light to completely calm.
Temperatures should remain in the 30s for the middle of next week as well. Generally, quiet weather conditions are expected.
By Friday, the spread of possibilities on the models becomes too large to make any firm conclusions about as the weather pattern becomes a bit more active. This uncertainty extends through the weekend and into early March.
