Late Week Weather

The persistent low pressure system that has kept our weather unsettled for days is finally on the move.

As the low passed overhead last night, it brought areas of serious flooding, especially in the eastern Finger Lakes.

The low is now just to our north and continues to send rain into the area.

Most of the rain this morning is thankfully light, though steady. This steadier rain will continue to pull out of the area by the mid to late morning hours. Some western and southern areas are already clear of the rain early this morning.

With the steadiest rain departing by noon, only stray showers are expected for the rest of the day. These should be light and will not cause any further flooding concerns. There should be breaks of sun in the overcast this afternoon as well.

Northwest winds will increase with speeds getting over 10 mph in some areas. Top gusts should be around 25 mph with a few areas getting close to 30 mph.

Cool air will slide in behind the low with highs today ranging from the upper 50s to the mid 60s.

Mixed skies early this evening will cloud back up with a few more scattered showers through the night. Overnight lows will be in the mid 40s for most areas.

A frontal boundary left behind by the low will remain over the area tomorrow, leading to a few more scattered showers. Rain is not expected to be widespread or heavy.

Sunshine will likely be minimal, with the best chance for a few breaks in the overcast coming late in the afternoon.

Winds will be from the north, but light, with speeds of 5-10 mph. Still, the winds will keep temperatures cool, with highs mainly in the low 50s with pockets of mid 50s.

Another area of low pressure will ride along the front and through our area on Friday. The models are split on the position of the front and the subsequent track of this low. On the two ends of the spectrum, we could get mainly missed with minimal rain, or we could face more flooding with an inch or two.

The truth will likely be somewhere in between, but I am hopeful in what I see on enough of the models that the heaviest rain will not fall in our area.

Weekend Transition

Scattered showers will remain possible into Saturday morning. However, if it does not rain and skies clear somewhat Friday night, the potential for some frost may need to be considered for Saturday morning.

Skies will clear at some point on Saturday, dependent on the track of the low and how quickly it leaves the area.

At the latest, sunshine should increase during the mid to late afternoon but could arrive as early as the morning for some areas.

Temperatures will respond with a high in the mid 60s, despite a steady northwest wind approaching 15 mph. Top gusts will be around 30 mph.

Sunday, Mother’s Day, is looking pleasant with light winds, lots of sunshine, and highs in the upper 60s. Morning lows will be down into the 40s, but colder pockets could end up a bit frosty.

Monday will be warmer yet, though the models are split on how cold the morning will be and how warm the afternoon will get. With southerly winds developing overnight and full sunshine during the day, I lean on the warmer side.

As such, I am expecting morning lows mainly in the 40s with afternoon highs pushing above 75 degrees in many areas.

Thin clouds will move in for Tuesday, holding temperatures back a couple degrees. Still, it will be warm with morning lows in the 50s and highs well into the 70s.

Scattered showers and storms will pop back into the forecast for the latter half of next week with temperatures remaining in the 70s. Which days are favored for rain is not yet clear.
