Friday’s Rain

The Finger Lakes region will be an atmospheric battleground today as low pressure along the Atlantic Coast throws moisture at the region and high pressure north of the Great Lakes pushes back with dry air.

The result will be a sharp divide between rainy weather and dry weather.

The day is starting off with this divide over the southeastern Finger Lakes, with a few showers making it as far west as Elmira and Ithaca.

As the low strengthens and moves north along the coast, precipitation should push further west. By the early afternoon, showers will make it to places such as Bath, Penn Yan, and Geneva while steadier rain will be possible near the I-81 corridor.

The boundary should hold relatively speaking through the afternoon and into the evening, though the western edge will wobble with on and off showers.

Most of the rain should end by around midnight and skies will start to slowly clear from west to east during the overnight.

With the low moving closer and strengthening, winds will also increase today, coming from the north-northwest at 10-15 mph. Gusts should top out around 25 mph.

These winds will pull cool air south with the clouds and rain also contributing to a chilly day. Many areas will only be near or even below 50 degrees. However, in the west, places like Dansville and Rochester should get close to 55 degrees.

Overnight temperatures will be cool, but clouds should hold on long enough to prevent it from getting too cold. The best chance for some 30s will be in the western Southern Tier with the rest of the region near or above 40 degrees.

Even for those areas that do dip into the 30s, frost will be unlikely due to steady winds around 10 mph.

Warm Pattern Settles In

The region should be mostly clear by sunrise and any lingering clouds will be quick to depart early in the morning.

Once the clouds leave, it should be several days until they reappear.

Northwest winds will once again be blustery, with speeds up to 15 mph and gusts of 25-30 mph, especially in the morning.

Yet, despite the steady northwest wind, the sunshine will give temperatures a pleasant boost. Afternoon highs will range through the 60s, averaging out around 65 degrees.

Skies will remain clear Saturday night, but a north wind should help mix up the atmosphere, thus preventing the cold air from settling near the surface. Most areas will see lows in the 40s again as a result.

Like Saturday morning, any areas that do manage to slip into the 30s shouldn’t see frost due to the winds.

Nearly due north winds will blow on Sunday. Though winds will be light with speeds under 10 mph, it will still knock a couple degrees off the highs. Most areas should be at least near 60 degrees, with parts of the Southern Tier holding onto the mid 60s.

Along the shore of Lake Ontario, the north winds will carry cool lake air onshore, holding highs north of the Thruway in the 50s.

Winds will become calm in the evening, then pick up again from the south during the overnight. This should once more prevent frost with temperatures rising overnight to the mid 40s after dipping to around 40 degrees in the evening.

With another day of full sunshine and a light south wind, temperatures will make another jump for Monday. Look for highs in the mid and upper 70s with nighttime temperatures sticking to the 50s.

Some clouds will begin to work in on Tuesday with a few late showers possible. Scattered showers will be possible daily for the rest of the week, but none of these days look like anything more that small, hit-or-miss showers and a couple light thunderstorms.

Temperatures will remain warm with daily highs well into the 70s persisting right into next weekend.
