Mid-Week Weather Forecast
A large area of low pressure continues to slowly spin its way northeastward and is located over the central Appalachian Mountains this morning.
A steady southeasterly flow off the Atlantic Ocean will keep our skies cloudy today.
Caught up in this flow is a small disturbance with an associated area of rain which is lifting north through Pennsylvania this morning.
This rain will spread into New York by the mid-morning and into the Finger Lakes during the latter half of the morning into the early afternoon.
There are some questions as to how well this will hold together as it moves into the area, but at a minimum, scattered showers should increase. The best chance for steadier rain will be east of Seneca Lake.
Much of the rain should depart by the mid-afternoon, leaving cloudy skies and just a few stray spits of rain here or there for the remainder of the day.
Southeast winds will continue to be blustery, with a few gusts over 30 mph from time to time, especially over higher elevations.
A south to north temperature gradient will set up today, with the warmer air in the north. Areas along and north of I-90, and down the Genesee Valley to Dansville, have the best shot at reaching or exceeding 70 degrees.
Meanwhile, higher elevations across the Southern Tier will remain in the mid 60s, with the rest of the area in the upper 60s.
Mainly quiet conditions are expected tonight into early Thursday, though it will remain cloudy. Winds will be lighter as the low weakens.
Breaks of sun will start to show up later Thursday morning and into the afternoon. This should help temperatures rise into the mid and even upper 70s.
That will be enough to pop up some showers and weak thunderstorms Thursday afternoon. These will remain hit or miss and should dissipate late in the day as the daytime heating wanes.

Weekend Weather Forecast
Friday will also be warm and a bit muggy, with highs pushing toward 80 degrees.
There may be some showers and storms in the morning leftover from storms across the Upper Great Lakes Thursday evening. Additional showers and storms are possible in the afternoon, likely remaining scattered.
A briefly stronger storm cannot be ruled out, but all in all, the severe threat is very low on Friday.
Showers and storms will continue to be possible Friday Night and should be come likely Saturday morning as a cold front progresses across the region.
It still looks like Saturday afternoon will dry out with highs in the mid 70s.
Cooler air will then build in, with highs Sunday sticking to the upper 50s. A few showers will be possible, along with plenty of clouds, but it should not be a washout and some areas may not even see any rain.
Chilly weather will continue into early next week with highs Monday struggling to the mid 50s and Tuesday only getting a couple degrees warmer.
Both days should have clouds and some showers, though dry air may start to work in later Tuesday.
As long as the nighttime hours stay cloudy, temperatures will remain near or above 40 degrees for most areas and frost will not be a major concern.
However, if skies clear at all, temperatures could easily dive into the 30s with areas of frost. Keep an eye on the forecast for Monday and Tuesday night if you’ve got plants in the ground.
Temperatures will moderate slightly for the latter half of next week, but will still be on the cooler side with highs around 60 degrees favored.
