Taste of Summer
The weather will wake up a bit today and remember that June 1st was the start of the meteorological summer season with a surge of heat and humidity.
Steady south and southwest winds between high pressure over the Atlantic and a slow-moving front across the Upper Great Lakes will push the hotter air into the area.
Urban centers and some valley locations will push toward 90 degrees this afternoon, while the rest of the region sees mid and upper 80s. Dewpoints will climb into the mid 60s, making it feel muggy with heat index values a touch higher than the actual temperature.
Skies will be sunny with some small fair weather clouds. No rain is expected today.
Smoke will still be present in the atmosphere, though, as a whole, it should be less than yesterday. Still, some periods will be hazier than others, and smoke will linger near the surface, so you may occasionally smell it, too.
A warm night is ahead with lows ranging through the 60s. Skies will be mostly clear through the evening, but some clouds will eventually work in overnight.
Thursday will have clouds and a few breaks of sun with scattered showers and thunderstorms developing in the mid to late afternoon. Not all areas will see a storm or rain.
It will remain warm with highs in the low and mid 80s. Humidity will match or slightly exceed today, providing plenty of fuel for the storms as the front moves in. This may result in a couple isolated, briefly severe storms with strong winds the primary threat.
Thunderstorms will transition to showers during the evening and mainly dissipate overnight.
Smoke will remain light overall on Thursday, but like today will linger near the surface.

Weekend Weather Forecast
Rain will be more widespread on Friday, with numerous showers and a few thunderstorms throughout the day with the front nearly stationary nearby.
Temperatures will be held to the mid 70s and the atmosphere will be less primed for even an isolated severe storm. Much of the rain that falls will not be accompanied by thunder at all.
The atmosphere will still have quite a bit of moisture, however, so locally heavy downpours will be possible.
A few showers may linger into Saturday, mostly during the morning hours. Skies should turn sunnier during the afternoon.
A northwest wind will develop with speeds up to 10 mph. Temperatures will respond by peaking in the low 70s.
Sunday looks quiet with sun and clouds. Highs should nudge up into the mid 70s with light and variable winds.
Our next weather maker will move in later Monday with another round of scattered showers and storms. The atmosphere shows some signs of being more supportive of severe storms, so this will be something to monitor through the weekend.
After a few more showers on Tuesday, the rest of next week looks pretty quiet. Temperatures throughout the week should be in the 70s, though some areas may push toward 80 degrees late in the week.
