Cold Front Today
A cold front will drop southeast across the region today with a few showers and storms and cooler temperatures for the 4th of July.
The best chance for thunderstorms today will be during the early and mid afternoon hours.
Scattered showers and storms are expected to develop ahead of the front and move southeast.
The storms will remain isolated to scattered, possibly combining into a small cluster of storms over the southeastern quadrant of the region.
The threat of severe weather is greater to our east, but some locally strong thunderstorm winds will still be possible in our area, in addition to lightning and brief downpours.
Late in the afternoon, the front should move through, pushing the storms out of the area and leading to some late sunshine. Skies will quickly become mostly clear this evening.
Temperatures today will top out in the upper 70s for most with highs near or just above 80 degrees in the typically warmer urban and valley locations. A few higher elevations will stick to the mid 70s.
Northwest winds may be a bit breezy behind the front late this afternoon but should be lighter tonight. Cool, dry air will push in with overnight lows ranging through the 50s.
A northwest wind will persist on Friday, keeping humidity levels low and temperatures comfortable. Afternoon highs will range through the 70s, with most areas a degree or two on either side of 75 degrees. A few developed valley locations, such as Dansville and Elmira, may push toward 80 degrees.
Friday night will also be cool with lows again ranging through the 50s beneath mostly clear skies.

Quick Warm Up
During the second half of the night Friday night, winds will swing around to the south. While they will remain light, they will quickly warm our temperatures.
Highs on Saturday should jump into the mid 80s with a few warmer pockets. Sunday will be even warmer, with highs in the upper 80s and low 90s.
Humidity levels will remain lower on Saturday with dewpoints sticking near 60 degrees. On Sunday, it will feel much muggier with dewpoints pushing toward 70 degrees.
That should result in heat index values on Sunday several degrees above the actual temperature with mid and possibly even pockets of upper 90s.
Dry weather will persist through the holiday weekend as well. Rain is not expected either Saturday or Sunday, with mainly thin clouds high in the atmosphere mixing with the sunshine.
Saturday night will be warm with lows in the upper half of the 60s. Sunday night will see many areas at or above 70 degrees overnight.
The next chance for rain after today will come on Monday as a cold front moves through. Scattered showers and storms will be possible, but it is too early to tell much more.
Temperatures should be knocked back to the low 80s by Tuesday. A few morning showers will be possible before increasing sunshine.
Unsettled weather looks possible again late next week, with temperatures remaining somewhere in the vicinity of 80 degrees.
