Cold Front Rumbles Through

Another hot day is ahead for the Finger Lakes, but a late cold front will bring some thunderstorms.

Heat advisories are in effect for portions of the area for a second straight day as hot and humid weather continues.

Many places will be near or slightly above 90 degrees today with heat index values ranging through the 90s.

Skies will be sunny with building fair weather clouds through the morning and first half of the afternoon.

During the mid to late afternoon, as the cold front approaches, showers and thunderstorms should start to pop up. The storms may be able to organize into a line just ahead of the cold front.

Winds aloft in the atmosphere are not overly supportive of severe weather, but the heat and humidity will provide ample fuel.

A few of the storms may become strong to severe, with localized damaging winds and perhaps some hail. Widespread severe weather is not expected. Frequent lightning and heavy downpours will be more common.

Winds will turn from the southwest to the west with the frontal passage late in the afternoon. A further shift to the northwest will take place overnight.

Skies will be mostly cloudy tonight, though some breaks in the clouds will be possible from time to time. A stray shower this evening cannot be ruled out.

Cooler, less humid air will build in on the northwest winds with overnight lows in the mid 60s.

Northwest winds will persist on Tuesday with light speeds around 5 mph. Skies will be rather cloudy and a few stray showers will be possible.

Temperatures will top out in the mid and upper 70s with a few places hitting 80 degrees.

Warm and Unsettled Weather

Our weather pattern for the rest of this week and into next week looks very typical for July, with warm temperatures and occasional weather systems bringing showers and storms.

Wednesday is looking dry with a mix of sun and clouds. Light and variable or calm winds are expected both Tuesday night and into the daytime hours Wednesday.

Temperatures will start the day in the low 60s with highs reaching the low 80s.

The next system will move in on Thursday with scattered showers and storms. Temperatures will get a small upward nudge ahead of the system into the mid 80s.

Friday will have some scattered showers, but shouldn’t be a washout. Highs will be in the low 80s.

Saturday is the next best chance after Wednesday at being completely dry, but at this point in time, some scattered morning showers cannot be ruled out. Highs will bounce back to the mid 80s.

Showers and storms will be possible on Sunday with highs in the mid 80s.

Temperatures next week look like they will stick to the 80s with occasional showers and storms as weather systems pass through, though the timing of such systems at this point is too uncertain to pinpoint.
