Cold Front
A slow moving cold front will move through the area overnight tonight and into Thursday.
Out ahead of the front, it will be another warm day across the region.
An uptick in cloud cover will probably reduce high temperatures a couple degrees compared to yesterday. However, it is still plenty hot, with a Heat Advisory continuing for Tompkins, Schuyler, Chemung, and Tioga counties.
These areas will have the best shot at reaching or slightly exceeding 90 degrees this afternoon. With the humidity, heat index values will locally reach the upper 90s.
Across the rest of the region, highs will range between 85 and 90 degrees with heat index values in the low to mid 90s.
There will be a small chance for an isolated shower or storm this afternoon. The majority of the region will stay dry, though.
Clouds will increase overnight as the front slides through and ends up just south of the region. Overnight lows will mainly be in the mid 60s.
On Thursday, low pressure will ride along the front, which will remain to our south. This should lead to a period of widespread showers or steady light to moderate rainfall.
The rain will increase through the morning and be steadiest during the afternoon and early evening hours.
There is a bit of uncertainty about how steady the rain becomes, especially north of the Thruway. As such, potential rainfall amounts vary significantly, ranging from just a few hundredths of an inch all the way up to around an inch or even locally more. Most areas will probably end up between a quarter and half an inch.
With all the clouds and showers about, highs on Thursday will be limited to the mid 70s.
Rain showers may linger into the overnight, but should eventually come to an end with clearing skies. Areas of fog will be possible during the overnight and into the early morning hours Friday with lows in the mid 50s.

Quiet Stretch of Weather
High pressure will take control of the weather behind Thursday’s low pressure and will bring quiet weather through the weekend and into next week.
Friday will have a mix of sun and clouds. North winds will blow with speeds up to 10 mph and gusts of 20-25 mph.
Cooler, dry air will build in on these winds with highs in the mid 70s and dewpoints in the 50s.
Clear skies Friday night will allow temperatures to slip back to the low and mid 50s with a few upper 40s in some of the typically cooler pockets.
Saturday will have sun and clouds with a high in the mid and upper 70s. North winds will still be present, but a bit lighter than on Friday, with speeds of 5-10 mph.
After another cool night with lows ranging through the 50s, Sunday will warm a couple more degrees with highs in the low 80s. Light and variable winds are expected.
Monday and Tuesday will continue the trend with sun and clouds. Temperatures will nudge upward a bit more with highs in the low and mid 80s. Dewpoints will remain low, though, remaining mainly in the 50s.
There will be a slight chance for some rain later in the week, but all in all, dry weather is likely to persist. Rain chances will slowly increase next weekend and during the following week.
