Late Week Weather Forecast

A stalled out frontal boundary has been the focal point for occasional rounds of showers throughout this week.

Today may end up being the rainiest of the days, especially for the eastern and southern halves of the region.

The early morning hours will be limited to a few scattered showers, with rain increasing later this morning and into the afternoon.

Rain will gradually taper off from west to east during the mid to late afternoon.

Most of the region should see primarily light rain, though it may all steadily for a couple hours. However, localized thundery downpours will be possible, and a band of heavier rain may just clip the region.

The chances for more widespread heavy rain will be greatest across and near Tioga and Cortland counties. Heavy rain will be isolated across the rest of the Southern Tier and for areas east of Seneca Lake.

As such, rain amounts will be highly variable. Most areas will see under a half inch, especially in the northwestern quadrant. Locally, however, amounts of one to two inches will be possible.

Winds will be southerly today, but not as strong as was originally expected. Top wind speeds will be around 10 mph and top gusts around 20 mph.

Most areas will likely see a high in the low 70s today, though urban and valley locations may see mid 70s.

By sunset, rain should be limited to a few scattered showers. These will continue into the nighttime hours. Overnight temperatures will still be mild, but most areas should dip just below 60 degrees.

Scattered showers will continue to be possible here and there on Friday, particularly in the morning and first half of the afternoon. Sunshine should poke in and out of the clouds, increasing during the afternoon hours.

Wind speeds Friday will be from the northwest at 5-10 mph with afternoon highs mainly in the mid 70s.

Quiet Weekend, Complex Set Up Next Week

High pressure will develop overhead Friday night into Saturday, then track eastward on Sunday.

The result will be a quiet weekend with some sunshine.

Saturday will start with morning temperatures in the low and mid 50s with afternoon highs in the mid 70s. Sunday will be a few degrees warmer on each end.

Areas of thin clouds will be present throughout the weekend. Most of the time, the sun should be able to shine through these clouds to a large extent. At times, though, the sunshine may be filtered.

A few fair weather clouds will also be present during the late morning and afternoon hours. No rain will fall, though.

The weather pattern over the Eastern United States gets very complicated beyond that. A new high pressure system will be developing over central Canada, spreading its influence southeastward. The frontal boundary over us now will still be lingering across the Mid-Atlantic. And a pair of tropical systems will be tracking into the waters off the Southeast coast.

The eastern of these two systems has already been named Humberto and is expected to be somewhere between the Bahamas and Bermuda early next week.

The western of the two systems, which will be named Imelda, is the more uncertain. If Imelda can get out ahead of Humberto, it could make landfall in the Carolinas. However, with the frontal boundary lingering to its north, rain could develop well out ahead of Imelda.

Models are still in a generally good agreement that rain will not make it this far north, but the number of outliers showing rain has increased. If it does rain, Tuesday seems most likely.

With this type of setup, anything is still possible, so it will be worth watching over the coming days.

At the very least, it looks as though clouds will increase and thicken early next week. Temperatures will likely remain warm on Monday, then start to drop as the Canadian high pressure approaches and takes over.

Wednesday and Thursday in particular look quite cool with highs far down into the 60s, and possibly some areas of frost Thursday morning. Temperatures should rebound back toward 70 by next weekend.
